KMD2236 A Day at the Museum

SOLD
Last weekend I was visiting in Kansas City looking for fall tree reference. Since the fall colors still hadn't peaked we went to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum. What a treat for me, it is a beautiful museum and of course I had my camera and recorded this Mom with her 2 kids studying the large Monet painting. It was a must to paint!

KM2009 Golden Glow

This little oil painting was inspired from a scene while traveling in Montana outside of the town of Bigfork which is near Flathead Lake. This scene of the late day light was found between Bigfork and the entrance to West Glacier National Park. It was the time of day when the sun is going down, the day is cooling off and everything just glows.

KMD2235 Joyous and Free

SOLD
I have painted a scene from this garden before but am drawn back to it because of the brilliant reds in the poppies surrounded by wild grasses and foliage. I love gardens that are just a little out of control that seem to express themselves as well as the intent of the gardener.

KMD2234 Lone Star

SOLD

I am beginning to catch up a bit and have been wanting to paint this little poppy since my September trip in search of the turning aspen here in Colorado. This poppy was so hardy and the last one left blooming in the cool fall days sitting adjacent to some aspen trees that I came across early in the morning in Crested Butte.

KM2030 Bursting in Vibrance

SOLD

This small oil painting is a looser interpretation of one of my favorite flowers-the poppy. I have painted many of these red European poppies and each time I do I like to look for new ways to interpret them. This floral was painted in a more abstract manner leaving the background loose in shape and form and letting the brilliant color of the flower to carry the composition.

Colorado Fall is so spectacular that it is hard not to just paint the fall colors exclusively, especially as the days get shorter and cooler telling us that we don't have many ahead like these perfect days with winter coming on.

KM2224 Poppy Reflection

SOLD
I have been getting ready for our show here at Brushstrokes Gallery so have fallen behind in the daily paintings! I took this photo last summer in Crested Butte and loved the subtle reflection of the poppies in the window. They were growing underneath the dark wooden windowsill and were a wonderful contrast to the weathered wood.

Back to the florals. I just like to shake it up to keep it interesting. One of the joys of being an artist is to jump around to all my favorite subjects depending on what strikes my fancy! Obviously, it was flowers today from an old photo I recently came across.

KM2222 Golden Days of Fall

SOLD

This is a study for a larger piece that I plan to put in our upcoming show at Brushstrokes Studio on October 17. We found this scene when coming off of Ohio Pass outside of Crested Butte last weekend. Ironically, my good friend Pat had been there the day before photographing and suggested we take a look ourselves. I had never gone over that pass and it was an incredible find. Of course, last weekend was just prime for fall colors and changing leaves and was awesome everywhere we went. Perfect Colorado days.

SOLD

Here is my first of many to come from my trip here in Colorado in search of gold! I can't wait to get to more of my photos to keep living the incredible weekend of being surrounded by warm sun glowing thru all the yellow, orange and red Aspen leaves.

Also, the Daily Painters are all posting a painting with orange on Wednesday so go check it out there as well: Daily Painters Website
I realize I have more yellow than orange, but no one said how orange, so think of my colors as orange-yellow!

KM2220 In Morning Shadows

SOLD
I have just returned from Aspen, the Maroon Bells and then Kebler Pass and Crested Butte, Colorado where I saw some of the most awesome fall scenery and colors. You will be seeing some of what I found later this week.
I painted this scene from a place in Provence, France, but I cannot remember where it was! I have so many pictures that now and again I pull one out that I have always wanted to paint but forget where I was as I seem to be enamored everywhere I am!

KM2219 Blue Door

I found this scene last year while in Greece wandering around the island of Hydra.
We arrived there by boat from Napflio, our home base. We spent the morning exploring the many narrow cobblestone streets where there are no vehicles and only burros for transportation. We were so entranced that we actually got lost and almost missed the boat home which wouldn't have been a problem for me as I still had lots more pictures to find!

KM2218 Afternoon Glow

The late afternoon light casts such great shadows and just kisses the tree tops. This moment was found outside of Lake City, Colorado last July. We headed out and ventured up Engineer Pass as the sun was going down leaving just the last warm glow of the day.

KM2217 Warm Afternoon

SOLD

I did this painting in oil from another of those photos found in my home studio while doing some much needed cleaning and clutter clearing. I am easily sidetracked and had to paint this so there is much clutter to attend to still!!!
Anyway, I love the simplicity of this landscape with the arroyo leading you back to the cluster of trees.

SOLD
This little scene reflects how I am feeling here in Denver this perfect September day. Is there nothing more heavenly than a fall day when the air is crisp and the skies are blue? I just love the feeling of the days that have lost the edge of the summer heat and now the sunshine on your shoulders is welcomed in anticipation of the cooler days ahead.

SOLD

Another poppy painting? But of course, they are just such fun to paint and look at that I love doing them in between new ideas that are brewing. These poppies were growing wild in our Colorado mountains surrounded by wild grasses all of which were dancing in a gentle breeze.

Can't get away from Crested Butte and the Aspen groves. There is something so gentle about the quaking Aspen and the green meadows where these were growing. The white trunks take on such a glow when the light is reflecting off of them.

This painting is for an upcoming show at my gallery, Brushstrokes here in Denver. The show is on October 17 but I am working on paintings for it now, and am excited about lots of new ideas for it. Stay posted, there will be more that I will be posting in between my small daily paintings. This scene is once again from Crested Butte, Colorado from a photo I took several years ago, before the advent of the digital camera!

SOLD

I seem to be into skies recently. Here is one from an early evening outside of Crested Butte, the area that has provided an abundance of painting materials for me in my passion for the landscape. Later this month I will be going to Aspen and Crested Butte in search of the brilliant changing Aspen scenes. Hopefully the weather will hold and it will be a year of color!

KM2009 Lone Tree

SOLD

I have painted over the original "Lone Tree" painting that I posted several days ago. I am striving to loosen up my brushwork which I accomplished in this painting but it felt unfinished to me. I have added more contrast to the painting without comprising the looser brushwork and I am very satisfied with the results of this little painting.
Let me know your thoughts!

KM2208 Carribean Skies

SOLD
I came across some photos that I had taken quite a few years ago in the Bahamas. I was particularly drawn to this one because of the dramatic skies filled with the threatening storm clouds of ominous color and contrasting light. The out islands of the Bahamas have a lot of low growth so the beauty of the scenery for me is the luscious turquoise waters contrasted storm clouds, a result of the fast moving weather systems that blow through.

KM2206 Glorious Poppies

SOLD
I am always drawn to the wilder, less structured gardens. This painting glorifies the wonderful poppy which I do so often. The poppy is so bold and showy that it is hard to pass one up to paint and I used the palette knife to do most of this to keep the painting on the wilder side as well.

KM2205 Summer Splendor

SOLD
Our Botanic Gardens here in Denver are a plethora of material to photograph and paint. This little scene was hidden behind the Alpine Garden where I go every year to see what may be new there. The dappled morning light is so romantic on an early summer morning when it is still cool and the dew is still on the ground.

As a painter I am continually exploring and working on my style of painting. I am exploring a looser and more expressive style using fewer brushstrokes to create my visual story . That is what this piece represents. Let me know what your thoughts as far as how this painting might speak to you.

The flower is the poetry of reproduction.
It is an example of the eternal seductiveness of life.

~Jean Giraudoux

Surprise! I do actually paint something other than poppies! These Cone flowers were photographed at the Denver Botanic Gardens showing off their luscious magenta colors while contrasting the grayed greens in the background. KM2201 Glorious Evening

SOLD
My favorite time of day is as the sun is going down and all the world seems to become quiet and calm leaving behind the frenzy of the day. This scene was in Montana where the sunsets are vivid and the country is open and one can see for miles. I really like the distance the telephone poles add in addtion to some nostalgia.

KM3000 Summer Meadow

SOLD

Here is another painting done on my little 4"x6" linen canvas panels. This scene was in North Park, Colorado a few summers ago. I am using these small panels to really practice loosening up my painting style. I am attempting to paint each 4x6 panel in as few strokes as I can, requiring a lot more focus on where I place each brushstroke, making sure my colors are just the right value and temperature before I apply them.

KM2194 Poppy Paradise

SOLD
This is a small study that I have painted and like so much that I will be doing a large version of it as well. Sometimes I question why I keep painting poppies when nature has so many different flowers but the poppy for me is so vibrant and such a paradox of being so hardy and fragile at the same time. They are especially beautiful when growing in gardens filled with other varieties of flowers.

Last week we had a torrential rainfall at my house here in Denver, flooding the basement. While cleaning up the mess I came across a boxful of photographs.....something out of the past!!!! Anyway, I got really excited about my find and a change from the digital I ususally work with. I loved this piece from Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. It brings back fond memories of several trips there as well as a fun subject I forgot I had to paint!
