KMD2607 One Spring Morning (urban, Europe, urbanscape, floral, garden)

SOLD
I have painted this scene before in a different composition (it was 48"x60") so it is fun to do a small version as well. There are some scenes that I love to paint more than once with different view points and this is one of them! This scene was found several years ago in Germany. We were driving thru a small town and I remember coming to a screeching halt (luckily no one was behind me) to get out and photograph it.

KMD2606 Solo (Pet, dog, Boxer dog, animal)

SOLD
I am so enamored with Solo, my brother and sister in law's boxer. She has so many expressions that just scream to be put to canvas, but then I am so partial to Boxers as I grew up with them and know what beautiful friends they are. Solo has such a sad yet regal look in this particular piece.

KM2596 Dancing With Vibrance (abstact, floral, original acylic painting)

SOLD
This abstract is the 2nd in a series that I started and posted the first one several months ago. These are so joyous to create with the vibrant colors, textures and the challenge of working with a lot of negative space as part of my composition.

KME2589 Guinea in Blue by Kit Hevron Mahoney (Encaustic painting)

Finally, I have some encaustic paintings to show. It took awhile to set up a studio and start experimenting. I did this little painting inspired by a piece I did in a workshop in Texas last January. I stayed with a good friend and fellow artist, Julie, in Boerne, TX who has a Guinea Hen living on her property. She sent me these incredibly beautiful feathers that the unnamed Guinea leaves behind which I have immortalized.
It is a challenge to find time to experiment in the encaustics, abstracts and keep up with my regular painting these days but I love the challenge.
I have a little description of encaustic for those who are wondering what the hec it is!
Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used.
Encaustic painting was practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B.C. Click here for more history

KM2595 I Want to go Too (dogs, pets, animals)

SOLD
While walking my dog Farley near the studio we passed these 3 dogs patiently waiting for their owner to return. I happened to have my camera and was able to capture this expressive scene. I love being able to capture a rare moment and put it on canvas.

KMD2594 Rocky Mountain High (landscape, mountains, Colorado)

SOLD
At last, a moment to do one of my small daily paintings. I have been busy with some great commissions and experimenting with some abstract paintings. I am in a real period of exploration and just loving the new focus. I will be posting some of my new works soon. Meanwhile, this is a scene I have painted many times as it is a favorite Colorado area: the Maroon Bells Wilderness area.

KM2591 Steeping in Brillliance ( autumn, fall, landscape, waterscape)

I started this painting with large, thick brushstrokes but was unsatisfied with where it was going so I changed over to the palette knife and got a result that I am really happy with. I can't believe such a scene is in my backyard but this was found near my house last fall while walking my dog Farley. His insistence on a daily walk keeps me in shape and aware of the beautiful world around me!

KMD2590 Waiting to Sing (birds, waxwing, nature, original oil painting

With spring almost here I am now hearing symphonies of the birds singing. I don't even listen to my music while walking my dog in preference to the music of these great creatures announcing the arrival of spring.
I have been challenged by my painting partner on this painting as to whether this is a finished piece. Let me know your vote and I will tell you ours!

KMD2588 Fleeting Moment (landscape, Southwest, original oil painting)

Once again I am having fun expressing myself using the palette knife as my brush. I love working from photos I took several years back in Basque del Apache in New Mexico. The fall colors are so wonderfully warm and vibrant that I am continually drawn to subjects with those colors.

KMD2587 Glowing Vista (landscape, vista, original oil painting)

Many collectors are surprised when I tell them that I paint over some paintings that just don't go where I had intended them to go. This is one such painting. Once I let go of a painting that isn't working the new painting is almost always a great success. I feel that about this one. It is a cathartic experience to let go of the frustration of a painting going nowhere to opening oneself to a fresh new start.

KM2585 Journey into Spring (landscape, Texas Hill Country, abstracted landscape, bluebonnets)

SOLD
It has been very busy at the studio with our hosting 2 different fundraisers: The Painted Violin for the Denver Young Artists Orchestra and the Art of Nursing Benefit for the U of Colo College of Nursing. That is my excuse for not posting my small daily paintings as regularly and I also have been working larger paintings as posted here. This is an abstracted landscape done entirely with a large palette knife. It was very freeing to paint this without a brush! This is a scene from last spring in the Texas Hill Country.

KM2584 What are You Looking At (cows, cattle, animal, livestock)

For all the painting I have been doing lately, it feels like I don't have much to show, but then I forget that it takes more time to create these larger paintings. I am also spending more time exploring encaustic painting and some more abstracted works.
I had to do this painting of the cows as they are so curious and whenever you go to photograph them they all turn and come your way to see what you are up to.

KMD2583 Fall Vista (fall, Italy, landscape, autumn landscape)

SOLD
I found this wonderful picture taken in the Tuscan region of Italy while traveling there with my Brushstrokes Studio partners John and Anita. I painted this with heavy paint on a palette knife. It is a challenge to use the palette knife on these small paintings but really fun to see how much one can simplify a busy landscape with this technique.

KMD2582 Warm Reflections (fall, autumn, waterscape, reflections)

I painted this scene at the end of 2010 and just discovered that I had not posted it.
The subject, of course, is one of my latest fascinations.......patterns of color and design found in water reflections. It is exciting and frustrating to have so much photo reference accumulated and so little time to paint it all. It is a wonderful life to be passionate about creating as it is a continual learning curve with endless possibilities.

KM2582 Fall Glory (autumn, fall, landscape, original oil painting)

This is a study for a larger painting that I have been commissioned to paint. My collectors had the thrill of watching this come to life as they watched me paint it at Brushstrokes Gallery where my studio is shared with my partners John and Anita. This is when it is such fun to have a working studio-gallery where our collectors and art lovers can come in and watch the creative process of painting.

KMD2581 This Little Piggy Too (farm animal, piglet, pig, animal)

SOLD
I had started this little guy a month ago and got sidetracked and put him aside. I just found the canvas under a pile of "to do's" that I had forgotten to do!
This is a little piggy photographed in China in a small village where the people raise their livestock practically in their homes. The family must have wondered about our American tour group all excitedly photographing their little piglets as though they had never seen one before! Really, it was a photo opt with the little piglets so beautifully backlit.

KMD2580 Just Grazing (calf, cow, New Zealand, pastural, original oil painting)

SOLD
I just couldn't stray too far from my latest animal passion. Who knows why I feel compelled to paint a subject but when it speaks to me I know I best go for it while I am excited about it for tomorrow it might be something totally different. Perhaps it is because I am a Gemini! This little fellow was photographed several years ago when my husband and I visited New Zealand, a wonderful, memorable journey.

KMD2579 Crimson Wonders (floral, garden, red poppies)

SOLD
I came across another poppy picture that I now don't remember where I photographed it as I shoot poppies every spring. By now I have quite a collection and never tire of them. Poppies are such a joy to paint as they are such joyous flowers and the bright reds and oranges create an exciting energy both in the painting process and in the final painting.

KMD2578 Walkin in the Rain (urban, figurative, urban landscape)

SOLD
The real fun of these small paintings is jumping around to different subject matter. It is great to challenge myself with a variety of subjects and compositions keeping the creative juices flowing. I don't do too many urbans, but am continually inspired by my gallery partner John K. Harrell, the king of urbans! This is a scene shot in Portland when I had the opportunity to be in a gallery there.

KMD2577 Summer Gold (California poppy, floral, flowers, garden)

KMD2576 Life is Good (Polar bear, cub, wildlife, animals)

I am back painting and posting after a busy Holiday season and a week away in Texas for a really exciting workshop in encaustics. More to come about encaustics in future postings.
Meanwhile, I seem to be in a mode to paint animals and this little guy was photographed at the Denver Zoo quite a few years ago. My friend Pat and I were mesmerized for the longest time, watching and photographing this little guy and his sibling playing on and around a patient Mama. I have wanted to paint some of my photos forever and now is the time!

KM2540 Into the Village (Germany, village, Europe, urbanscape)

SOLD
I forgot to post this little painting that was done for our miniature show in December. It is a scene from a quiet village in Germany when I visited with friends several years ago. I love the colors that all the old buildings in European villages have lining all the narrow streets. Every turn is a painting and I have a photo for just about every turn I make while wandering the cobblestone streets!

KM2570 Mountain Contemporary (mountains, landscape, abstracted)

I was commissioned to paint a 48x60 abstract mountain scene that didn't have too many bright colors (a challenge for me!) I did almost the entire painting with a large palette knife and one stroke with a huge brush loaded with gobs of paint. This was such fun experimenting with acrylics and the unforgiving palette knife tool.
I can't wait to get back to more experimentation.

KMD2565 Jewel (dog, pet portrait, animal)

This is a portrait I did for a client as a gift to their parents for Christmas this year. I did not meet Jewel and painted her from a photo but she looked like a sweet being and it was a gift for me to get to paint her.

KMD2573 Cold Clear Day (Bluejay, birds, wildlife, winter)

SOLD
I photographed this fellow one Christmas day several years ago at my sister's house in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was a very cold, crisp clear Colorado day and this one was awaiting his turn at the feeder, puffing up his feathers to ward off the cold.
I love the blues of his plumage with the Colorado blue skies.
Some trivia: Blue Jays can make a large variety of sounds, and they may learn to mimic human speech. Blue Jays can also copy the cries of local hawks so well that it is sometimes difficult to tell which it is.

KM2520 Summer's Last Hurrah

I have been busy painting some more abstracted images to be placed in a spec home in Avon, Colorado so have not been tending to the daily paintings which I miss doing. I found that I had not posted this painting done last month which is a larger floral. With the warm December days we have had here in Denver it almost feels like this is a more appropriate subject even though Christmas is only days away!

KMD2567 Waiting for an Answer (birds, animals, ornithology, original oil painting)

SOLD
I have really been on a kick for the little birds, a symbol to me of freedom and sweet music. They are so entertaining as they dance around the bird feeder, sometimes not so patiently, waiting their turn.
I love waking up in the Springtime to the symphony of sounds that all the birds are making outside. Some mornings it is so loud that I can't hear the radio which is not a bad thing! I turn off the news and just listen to them trying to distinguish the many different sounds.

KMD2565 Gentle Giant (buffalo, animal, wildlife, bison, original fine art)

SOLD
I don't know why, but lately as I peruse my for painting ideas, I am moved to paint animals. I have never painted a buffalo so decided it was time. What is it that is so romantic about the mighty buffalo? They really aren't pretty animals but they are powerful and hold such a nostalgia in our psyche, I suppose reminiscent of the freedom days on the prairie.

KMD2564 Chick a Dee Dee Dee (songbird, birds, wildlife, original art)

SOLD
This little Chickadee is titled after the sound these wonderful little birds make. They are wonderful little songbirds and here is a bit of trivia about them: On cold winter nights, these birds reduce their body temperature by up to 10-12 °C to conserve energy. I am on a bird run as they are such wonderful creatures and I hope my paintings are the next best thing to having them with us.
