KMD30656 Redbird by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (6x6, Cardinal, bird, nature)

SOLD

I have been busy with some really fun commissions but needed to take a break from the current one. It is in the stage of "I think I have nailed it" but need to step back and evaluate how to finish it without overworking it. Painting this little Cardinal was a great way to divert my attention and keep the creative juices flowing!
Trivia: The cardinal is the only red bird in eastern North America with a crest on top of his or her head, which rises when the bird senses danger.

KMD888 'Ua'u Kani by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (7x5 original oil birds, baby bird)

SOLD
With my great love for animals, it was such a treat to paint this little fellow. While visiting my wonderful friends Pat and Connie in Kauai, Pat and I went to Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and Lighthouse. This little fellow, a Wedge-Tailed Shearwater was resting on a ledge at the lighthouse seemingly oblivious to all of us tourists happily snapping picture after picture of him. The Shearwater got its name because it is a seabird that hunts for food by skimming close to the surface of the water, then plunging through the waves to catch the fish or squid it spotted from the air. "Shear" means to cut or slice through. This bird seems to slice through the ocean spray as it flies in search of food.

KMD2748 You Say What? (6x6, original oil, by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney)

SOLD
I finally got back to the easel this week after returning from my trip to Kauai. I photographed this little fellow in between rain showers while getting a tour of the beautiful island. I discovered that this Red Crested Cardinal is also known as the Brazilian Cardinal and it was introduced around 1930 from South America. They move very quickly making it a challenge to get a good photo. I was happy to get this pose to paint.
