Poppies still remain one of my most favorite flowers to paint. I came across these on an early morning walk last month with my dog Farley who impatiently waited as I photographed them. (He has much different preferences on our walks!)
There is nothing more invigorating than the cool, fresh spring and summer mornings with dew on all the new flowers and the abundance of new life everywhere. I think spring is my most favorite season, followed by fall which is reflected in so much of my work.

While searching my reference files I came across this nostalgic scene that jumped out and spoke to me to paint. As I was painting it, my studio partner Anita commented "didn't you paint that once before?" In looking back through my many Daily Paintings, sure enough, I had painted it several years ago. But then, this is the person that has been know to buy the same book twice and discover part way into the book that I have already read it!!!!! It is fun to paint a scene again to see how it compares to how I approached it many years ago.

While perusing my reference looking for pictures for a commission I came across this image taken when in New England on a trip with my photographer friend Pat. It seemed like the perfect subject to paint with the 4th of July just around the corner. Back to the easel with a new spring subject. I am still in the busy time of painting for the Art Student's League Art Market and am trying not to get too frenzied as the days draw closer to the event. I have some really exciting new works, all abstracts that I am creating but it was fun to take a break and return to one of my favorite subjects; springtime and joyous and vibrant poppies. Enjoy!

KMD2268 Razzmatazz - (5x7, Red Poppy, acrylic painting, floral)

Spring is really here, early this year getting me into the floral mode for painting. I was struggling for a title for this painting to do it justice so I looked up the definition of crimson to find the word Razzmatazz and loved the way it rolls off the tongue.
Perfect! I loved the very deep rich reds and crimsons in this beautiful poppy and challenged myself to paint it in acrylic!
