This is a painting outside of my usual genre. It was painted one rainy day this spring as a means to paint from life without getting wet!

Here is another in my reflections series that I am working on. I find the still waters of spring and fall reflections to be so calming which is one feeling I love to convey in my artwork, especially in today's frenzied world.

KM2476 Spring Bouquet (floral, still life, flowers, sunflower)
I haven't done a floral still life since my pastel painting days. This was such fun to do because of the bright, spring colors and such a joyful combination of flowers bringing our much delayed spring into the studio.

KMD2478 Joyous Spring (garden, floral, poppies, flowers)
I painted a large version of this scene for our last show at Brushstrokes, but had to do a small version for the Daily Painters since it is such a fun subject and composition. Spring is taking its time in arriving here in Denver. We had an incredible bloom of the crabapple and other friut trees all around the city until it snowed. Ahh, springtime in the Rockies. I keep hoping that if I paint enough flowers mother nature will get the hint and let winter go!

KM2473 He Brings Luck (rooster, animal, landscape)
This rooster was such fun to paint. I took his picture in China when I was visiting last fall. As I paint new subjects it is fun to learn new information about them. I found the following about the rooster: Throughout different cultures the rooster has been a symbol of many things one of the most predominant is luck. Having some form of Rooster in your kitchen is said to bring you luck and could just make you feel good. Hopefully painting roosters brings the same!

KM2475 It Must be Spring (floral, poppies, garden, flowers, original oil)
After painting for our show "Identity Theft" here at Brushstrokes Studio Gallery here in Denver I had a great desire to be with my favorite poppies. It has been a really fun challenge to paint still life and roosters but I am also getting spring fever, which means everything is starting to bloom. So, I am itching to photograph and paint more florals. Here is a beautiful scene found from last year's poppy bloom as I couldn't wait for this year's bloom which is just around the corner.

KMD2470 Stacked (Still life, original oil, eggplant)
For our upcoming show, "Identity Theft" at Brushstrokes Studio-Gallery opening this Friday, each of has been challenged to paint each other's subject matter. I drew Anita Mosher's name and have been painting her specialty of still life and roosters. I will be posting them on my website: kithevronmahoney.
I did this little painting of eggplant after painting a larger still life with lemons and eggplant. Eggplant is not something I have much in my diet but it is so luscious and rich in color that it is a perfect still life subject.

KMD2469 Willow Creek Loop (bluebonnets, wildflowers, landscape, floral)
I am sitting at my computer longingly remembering the amazing trip through the Texas Hill country a few weeks ago when the Bluebonnets were covering the hills with their vibrant layers of purples and lavenders, spiced with the reds of the paintbrush and yellows of a variety of other wildflowers. The fragrance was intoxicating and it was a day that I never wanted to end. This painting helps take me back to that wonderful day!

KM2455 Afternoon Glow (urban, landscape, oil painting, China)
I have been busy getting ready for our upcoming show at Brushstrokes and while organizing my painting area I found this little plein air piece I painted last fall in China. It was a small village outside of Li Jiang, one of my favorite places we visited. This scene was painted in the late afternoon after taking a burro ride around the village.

KMD2465 Vibrantly Wild
With spring finally on its way (even though snow is expected here tonight) it is fun to anticipate all the new bloom whose leaves are starting to peek up out of the ground.

KM2463 Intermission (still life, ballet, toe shoes)
At Brushstrokes Studio Gallery here in Denver, we are planning a show called "Identity Theft" where each of the 3 of us paints the other's specialty. I drew my partner Anita, so will be doing a show of still life and roosters. Here is my first still life of one of my favorite things.......pink ballet toe shoes. Oh how I would love to be able to have one dance, full of grace and poise but think that at my stage of life I best stay with painting my favorite things.

KMD2464 Curious (nature, cows, cattle, animals)

There is something so heartwarming about a cow's gentle gaze. I'm sure that ranchers would think I am romanticizing these wonderful creatures but what can I say? I am a city girl and far removed from the ranch life. I am just an artist who loves to paint all living creatures.

KMD2460 Red Crested Cardinal ( bird, nature, wildlife)
While having lunch at the Contemporary Art Museum in Honolulu we were visited by these colorful birds who entertained us throughout our idealic lunch out on the lawn in the fragrant Hawaiian air. This is a Red Crested Cardinal which is fairly common in Honolulu. Also known as the Brazilian Cardinal, it was introduced around 1930 from South America. It feeds on seeds, plant matter, insects and fruit and anything from an artists luncheon!

KMD2457 Peaceful Valley (landscape, mountains, summer)
It was amazing to be driving into this valley near Ohio Pass in Colorado last summer. We were in and out of magnificent fast moving storms, so much hail that we would have to pull off the road to wait them out and then the sun would come out leaving pictures like this one.

KMD2456 Vibrant Splendor by Kit Hevron Mahoney (landscape, contemporary, oil)
I haven't been posting for awhile. It seems all the daily paintings I have done lately are not up to my standards hence I didn't post, perhaps an "artist block" or being very busy with lots of activity at the studio these days. Anyway I really was pleased with the abstract quality of this piece. I was drawn to the brilliant colors of the foreground and have expressed this as a "colorist" in my rendering.

KM2447 Monkey Pod Tree by Kit Hevron Mahoney (nature, tree, landscape)
SOLD
Back in Colorado after 6 glorious days of painting in Hawaii on the island of Oahu with a group of artists from Denver. This event was hosted by Linda VG Kelly who provided the most incredible paint out providing us with glorious spots to paint, 2 art shows and a wonderful cocktail party at her home on Oahu. She is a generous and gracious hostess giving us a most memorable experience.
This is one of my paintings done on the grounds of the Contemporary Art Museum of Honolulu. I fell in love with the Monkey Pod trees with their massive winding trunks and branches. It was heaven to paint in sunshine, with gentle breezes and no interruptions except the birds singing to us.

KMD2444 Nature's Brilliance by Kit Hevron Mahoney (floral, garden)

Each day that I set out to do my Daily Paintings (ok, every 3 days!) it's fun to see what inspires me. I love how the dailies allow me to jump all around in my smorgasboard of painting reference to see which excites me each day! I think the less colorful months of Jan/Feb lead me to the more colorful warm and bright colors of spring.

I will be going with my business partner Anita Mosher to paint on location with several other artists for the show: Artists Hawaii 2010 Reception & Art Show at Outrigger Reef Hotel on Feb 16.
