KMD2469 Willow Creek Loop (bluebonnets, wildflowers, landscape, floral)

SOLD

I am sitting at my computer longingly remembering the amazing trip through the Texas Hill country a few weeks ago when the Bluebonnets were covering the hills with their vibrant layers of purples and lavenders, spiced with the reds of the paintbrush and yellows of a variety of other wildflowers. The fragrance was intoxicating and it was a day that I never wanted to end. This painting helps take me back to that wonderful day!

KM2455 Afternoon Glow (urban, landscape, oil painting, China)

I have been busy getting ready for our upcoming show at Brushstrokes and while organizing my painting area I found this little plein air piece I painted last fall in China. It was a small village outside of Li Jiang, one of my favorite places we visited. This scene was painted in the late afternoon after taking a burro ride around the village.

KMD2465 Vibrantly Wild

SOLD
With spring finally on its way (even though snow is expected here tonight) it is fun to anticipate all the new bloom whose leaves are starting to peek up out of the ground.
I am off to Texas for a week and hope to come home with some great new images of the Bluebonnet bloom in the Hill Country.

KM2463 Intermission (still life, ballet, toe shoes)

At Brushstrokes Studio Gallery here in Denver, we are planning a show called "Identity Theft" where each of the 3 of us paints the other's specialty. I drew my partner Anita, so will be doing a show of still life and roosters. Here is my first still life of one of my favorite things.......pink ballet toe shoes. Oh how I would love to be able to have one dance, full of grace and poise but think that at my stage of life I best stay with painting my favorite things.

KMD2464 Curious (nature, cows, cattle, animals)

SOLD

There is something so heartwarming about a cow's gentle gaze. I'm sure that ranchers would think I am romanticizing these wonderful creatures but what can I say? I am a city girl and far removed from the ranch life. I am just an artist who loves to paint all living creatures.

KMD2460 Red Crested Cardinal ( bird, nature, wildlife)

SOLD
While having lunch at the Contemporary Art Museum in Honolulu we were visited by these colorful birds who entertained us throughout our idealic lunch out on the lawn in the fragrant Hawaiian air. This is a Red Crested Cardinal which is fairly common in Honolulu. Also known as the Brazilian Cardinal, it was introduced around 1930 from South America. It feeds on seeds, plant matter, insects and fruit and anything from an artists luncheon!

KMD2457 Peaceful Valley (landscape, mountains, summer)

It was amazing to be driving into this valley near Ohio Pass in Colorado last summer. We were in and out of magnificent fast moving storms, so much hail that we would have to pull off the road to wait them out and then the sun would come out leaving pictures like this one.

KMD2456 Vibrant Splendor by Kit Hevron Mahoney (landscape, contemporary, oil)

SOLD
I haven't been posting for awhile. It seems all the daily paintings I have done lately are not up to my standards hence I didn't post, perhaps an "artist block" or being very busy with lots of activity at the studio these days. Anyway I really was pleased with the abstract quality of this piece. I was drawn to the brilliant colors of the foreground and have expressed this as a "colorist" in my rendering.

I have a folder of photos that contains images I have always wanted to paint but have never gotten to for whatever reasons! This is one of the many that this Small Works Great Wonders adventure allows me to put on canvas. This scene is on a walk near our mountain place that I take every time I visit. In over 50 years I never have tired of the same walk as every season brings something new to celebrate.

KM2447 Monkey Pod Tree by Kit Hevron Mahoney (nature, tree, landscape)

SOLD
Back in Colorado after 6 glorious days of painting in Hawaii on the island of Oahu with a group of artists from Denver. This event was hosted by Linda VG Kelly who provided the most incredible paint out providing us with glorious spots to paint, 2 art shows and a wonderful cocktail party at her home on Oahu. She is a generous and gracious hostess giving us a most memorable experience.
This is one of my paintings done on the grounds of the Contemporary Art Museum of Honolulu. I fell in love with the Monkey Pod trees with their massive winding trunks and branches. It was heaven to paint in sunshine, with gentle breezes and no interruptions except the birds singing to us.

KMD2444 Nature's Brilliance by Kit Hevron Mahoney (floral, garden)

SOLD

Each day that I set out to do my Daily Paintings (ok, every 3 days!) it's fun to see what inspires me. I love how the dailies allow me to jump all around in my smorgasboard of painting reference to see which excites me each day! I think the less colorful months of Jan/Feb lead me to the more colorful warm and bright colors of spring.

KMD2442 Garden of Glory by Kit Hevron Mahoney (floral, garden, oil painting)

SOLD

KMD2440 Natures Gift by Kit Hevron Mahoney (landscape, fall, autumn)

SOLD

I have always been fascinated by what Nature provides to us artists. I was drawn to this more abstracted scene on one of my daily walks with my dog Farley. We live near the High Line Canal here in Denver, which was conceived in 1870 by early Colorado resident James Duff, who sought to turn eastern Denver into profitable farming land. It was originally 74 miles long. It is rarely used now but there are some amazing pictures from it when it is running. The reflected foliage colors in spring and fall inspire many abstracted scenes for me.

KMD2439 Manifest Destiny by Kit Hevron Mahoney (palette knife painting, sunset, ocean, Hawaii

SOLD
It is fun to dream of turquoise waters, beaches and warm salt air in our cold Colorado January! So I paint (this one with a palette knife) and dream of far away places and behold, I find I will be in Hawaii next month for an event in Honolulu: Artists Hawaii 2010. I will be going with my business partner Anita Mosher to paint on location with several other artists for the show: Artists Hawaii 2010 Reception & Art Show at Outrigger Reef Hotel on Feb 16.
I am so excited to be participating in this venture.

KMD2437 Azure Dreams by Kit Hevron Mahoney ( seascape, ocean oil painting)

SOLD - PROCEEDS TO GO TO PARTNERS IN HEALTH. THANK YOU LINDA from Denver, Colorado
This painting was painted in order to donate 100% of the proceeds of this sale to the charity of choice for the Haiti Disaster.
Watching the daily news of the horrendous aftermath of the Haiti earthquake has left me feeling very useless. Then I realized that the best way to utilize my talents would be to paint this beautiful Hawaiian scene given to me by my great friend Pat. When you pay with Paypal just make a note of the charity you want the donation given to and I will give the donation in your name.

KMD2436 Gentle Gaze (animal, cow, calf)

SOLD
I had to go all the way to China to find this fellow! He was in the courtyard of a villager in a small village outside of LiJiang. The whole family was working doing many daily chores like chopping wood, processing grains, feeding their cows and chickens. They were kind enough to allow us into their "backyard" to share a bit of their lives with us.

KMD2435 Glorious Autumn (Fall Landscape)

SOLD

For this year's paintings I am going thru all my zillions of picture files and finding pictures to paint that have been on my list for years. My subject matter will probably jump all over the place which is going to be fun.
Fall in Colorado is so glorious with the changing colors of our Aspen trees. This scene is on Ohio Pass near Crested Butte a few years ago when we had a spectacular fall.

KMD2434 Heavy Load

SOLD

I'm back to China again as there are so many incredible scenes I found there. This man was walking and guiding his oxen with a heavy load (no wonder we call them "Beasts of Burden".) The oxen was carrying a heavy load in the streets of a small village outside of LiJiang where village commerce is a mixed bag of bicycles, pedestrians, small vehicles, women carrying heavy loads on thier backs and oxen carrying the largest loads. This was a pretty impoverished village by our standards but a way of life for them.

KMD2433 Regal (wildlife, cats, nature, landscape)

SOLD

I am returning after a few weeks off from painting and regrouping for the great New Year ahead.
I was inspired to create this painting by my studio partner John K. Harrell who just completed a commissioned series of African animals. As he was working on his incredible paintings my friend Pat suggested we go to the Denver Zoo to see some baby animals she had seen on the news. We came upon this majestic cat who holds her head high.

KMD2427 Hen in Turquoise (Chickens, hens, landscape, China, animals)

I found this scene while on my trip to China in the ancient village of Zhouzhuang, an ancient water city that is called the “Venice of China”.
We spent over 3 hours in this amazing village with a plethora of painting and photographic subject matter. My travel companion Pat was amazed at how many pictures I shot of this one scene with roosters and hens, but the light was perfect and I had to get every angle!
Although hens and roosters aren't my usual fare, when I saw this hen surrounded by the colorful background I had to put it on canvas!

KMD2426 View from City Park (landscape, sunset, urban, oil painting)

SOLD
I have had this painting in mind for many years. I was plein air painting at City Park here in Denver one fall afternoon when a passerby offered to send me a picture he had taken with his new panoramic camera (film of course, so this tells how long I have held on to the picture). It was such a kind gesture and I regret that I don't have his name to thank him again and let him see what I created from his picture!

KMD2424 Pretty in Pink

SOLD
As the days grow colder and shorter I seem to be drawn to the colors and warmth of summer! The rose is one of my most favorite flowers (second to the poppy of course!)
I am always drawn not only to colorful flowers but love fragrant flowers as well.
This is a quote that sums up the heavenly fragrances of flowers for me:
"To be overcome by the fragrance of flowers is a delectable form of defeat".

KM2420 The Red Barn (landscape oil painting)

Here is another plein air painting done last fall. I went to Prospect Park in Lakewood, Colorado on a hot, sunny morning with artists Anita Mosher and Wes Hyde. I usually paint the creek that goes through the park but most of the trees had been decimated by a serious tornado several weeks before we went. Luckily, this nostalgic barn remained untouched and a lovely sight to paint.

KM2423 Summer Hibiscus (Floral, garden, landscape oil painting)

I painted this scene last August in Washington Park near our studio with my fellow painter Anita Mosher.
I have been inspired to do more plein air painting as I love the time to be outdoors and one with my subject.
Of course, I am a "Fair Weather" painter and only enjoy painting outdoors when the temperature is comfortable, not too many bugs or wind!
I was amazed to find Hibiscus growing in Colorado, they are a different variety from what I have known in the tropics.
