KMD2527 Nature's Wonder (waterfall, nature, landscape)

SOLD
This waterfall was such fun to paint. It was as though I was right there with every stroke I applied to the canvas. Working from photos does take one to the place but I wish I knew how to put the sounds and smells in to. Hopefully my painting can stir the imagination to fill that in!

KMD2526 The Red Fox (wildlife, animal, nature)

SOLD
Back to my other passion; animals. I have wanted to paint this image since the days of film before the advent of digital cameras (that is a few years!). I took this picture one winter while my husband and I were on a cross country ski weekend outside of Granby, Colorado. This little fellow was passing by the remote bed and breakfast where we were staying.

KMD2525 Warm Fall Day (autumn, fall, landscape, barn, original fine art)

SOLD
This is such an amazing scene from a photo taken in the midwest that my good friend Pat gave me to paint several years ago. I did a large painting of this but some images just keep asking to be painted. This was one. Fall is so amazing in every part of the country.

KMD2524 Another Era (landscape, barn original fine art)

SOLD

There is so much color and nostalgia in a run down building in the country. It is a mystery to the viewer as to what kinds of lives were lived there, what did they do, what did they look like and feel? Just the subject keeps the viewer engaged and full of wonder.

KMD2523 Willow Creek Loop (landscsape, Texas Hill Country, original fine art)

I have wanted to paint this scene since finding it last spring on my visit to Texas and the Hill Country when the bluebonnets were in bloom. I was drawn to the amazing red cliff in the background that contrasted all the brilliant spring greens in the grasses. I loved the serenity of the slow flowing creek in the middle of the scene.
I have painted this larger and am showing it in our upcoming "Landscape Personified" show this Friday at Brushstrokes Studio Gallery.

KMD2521 Wild Garden by Kit Hevron Mahoney (garden, floral, poppy, landscape, original fine art)

SOLD
With summer's end I had to have a last hurrah for the gardens. I love an unstructured garden where nature creates her own composition as was the case with this scene.

KM2515 Springtime in the Country (landscape, barn, countryside, original oil painting)

SOLD
As my life here has been busy I find that I am drawn to the quieter and peaceful scenes of the countryside. There is nothing like the nostalgia of a red barn symbolizing a way of life that we city folk romanticize. Just the setting, however lets us stay in our imaginations and in place that feels good.

KMD2518 Prickly Pear (landscape, cactus, original fine art, floral)

SOLD
I found this wonderful scene last spring while visiting the Hill Country of Texas in search of bluebonnets. Once one stops or slows down and looks around, it is amazing what a plethora of beauty that can be found surrounding us anywhere. I was so focused on searching for bluebonnet scenes that I almost overlooked this beautiful scene along a roadside.

KMD2378 Samantha (kitty, cat, pets, original fine art)

This is a tribute to my sweet, precious kitty Samantha who passed on last night. She and I were together for 17 years and she was a loving and true friend. Once, when I had laryngitis for 2 months I discovered that we had an amazing communication, all without words. In fact it was an eye opener as to how we can communicate without words with our amazing animal friends. I miss my little Samantha like crazy and know she was a once in a lifetime friend. Here's a cheer to our wonderful loving pets!

KM2516 Glorious Summer (aspen, landsscape, summer, original oil painting)

Another in my landscape series of painting with larger, bolder strokes and lots of paint. I am so enjoying the way my paintings are going by using less definition and more paint. This is a scene found one summer outside of Crested Butte on Kebler Pass while photographing with my Brushstrokes partner John K. Harrell. It took us quite a while to get over the pass as there was a photograph every 2 feet!

KMD2514 Oregon Countryside (landscape, barn, original fine art)

SOLD
Once again, going through my photo reference I came across this romantic scene while driving around the Oregon countryside. I was drawn to the contrasting and complimentary green and red grasses surrounding the barn. The northwest has such deep saturated colors under the usual cloudy skies.

KMD2517 Summer's End (landscape, autumn, fall, river, original oil painting)

SOLD
Summer coming to an end always leaves me with some melancholy; I look forward to the perfect Colorado days ahead but dread the shorter days. There must be some childhood memory of the great days of summer ending and school days ahead.
This scene was done at Upper Bear Creek last week for the Windows to the Divine paint out hosted by Evergreen Fine Art Gallery. It was one of those perfect Colorado days and a gift to be painting on location.

KM2510 A River Runs Through It ( autumn, fall, landscape, original fine art)

SOLD

This abstracted landscape was rendered using a palette knife and lots of paint giving a very textural finish. The scene is from an area outside of Crested Butte, Colorado near Ohio Pass. This particular Colorado fall was spectacular and the colors in the painting really represent what my eye saw. I hope this year will be as awesome as I plan to go back to Aspen and Crested Butte next month in search of more gold!

KMD2513 Greek Poppies (poppies, red, floral, original fine art)

SOLD

I wanted to challenge myself with this painting because of the warm reddish wall behind the bright red poppies. Making the poppies stand out against a similar color wall was fun to play all the different temperatures found in red! I was pleased with my result. The poppies, by the way, were found on a ruin in Greece.

KMD2507 Paris Rain (Paris, Europe, urbanscape, rain, original fine art)

SOLD

I had to jump to Paris for a day. Looking through my lifetime of photos from so many travels I think to myself how fortunate I am to have seen so many wonderful new places in addition to my beautiful Colorado. This photo was taken in Paris while wandering the Opera District and rain showers followed by sun all day. It made for some really romantic reflection subjects.

KMD2509 Jubilant (yellow poppy, floral, landscape, original fine art)

SOLD

I have been having such fun with the abstracted landscapes
but I decided to go back to my other passion; flowers.
I really love the composition of this scene even though I no
longer remember where the photo was taken, but it probably
was shot at our Botanic Gardens here in Denver. I still strive
to go more simplified, using fewer brushstrokes,
each one applied with purpose. It is really a challenge and
keeps me from getting lazy in my painting approach.

KMD2504 Warm Glow (landscape, original fine art, Southwest)

KMD2504

SOLD
Another in my series of the landscape abstracted. This was such an amazing scene that I came across several years ago on a trip to Taos. The late afternoon light was magical as it always is in New Mexico. I love the challenge of creating a mood and warm feeling with as few brushstrokes as possible (or palette knife strokes in this case)

KMD2502 Here's Looking at You ( calf, animal, livestock, cow, landscape)

SOLD
I painted this sweet face from reference taken last February in Hawaii while on Kualoa Ranch, which has been considered from ancient times to be one of the most sacred places on Oahu. It was a privilege to visit and have the time to tour and then stop and do some plein air painting there!

KMD2503 Vast Reaches (landscape, original fine art oil painting)

SOLD
Here is another in my 8x10" abstracted landscapes. It is a challenge to leave out all but the necessary detail to have it read and be fun for the viewer to engage and stay in the painting. I am loving working with more paint and larger strokes with the palette knife. Now to translate this to a really large canvas!

KMD2501 Mr. Red (rooster, landscape, wildlife, original fine art)

SOLD
Last spring, while visiting the Texas Hill Country we stopped in Luckenbach, Texas, where Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson changed the face of popular music and country music. Although this is known to be the "Best Dance Hall in Texas" we wandered around the place armed with cameras which is where I found this fellow who did not want to pose for me. He had to give up and stop as I was too persistent for him!

KMD2500 Vast Country (landscape, abstract, Colorado, original fine art)

SOLD
As part of my daily painting routine I chose to paint this landscape as an abstracted interpretation. I wanted to let the viewer become engaged in the painting with enough information that their own imagination can then keep them engaged to gow wherever it takes them. This was done with heavy paint using a palette knife to create the juicy and textural finish. Enjoy!

KMD2499 Texas Bluebonnets (floral landscape, bluebonnet, original fine art)

SOLD
I am finally getting back to last spring with the photos I took in the Texas Hill Country where the fields of bluebonnets were a sight to behold. We drove the Willow Creek loop outside of Fredericksburg and were lucky enough to be there at peak bloom. I am anxious to do some larger paintings from that trip as well.

KMD2497 Sunny Side Up (Sunflower, landscape, floral, original fine art)

SOLD

I will occasionally be adding 8"x10" and 9"x12" paintings to my Small Gems blog for a change of pace from the smaller 5x7 and 6x6 sizes. This painting is 9"x12" and a warm colorful scene from some sunflower fields in northeastern Colorado. I photographed this scene several years ago when traveling to the Pawnee Grasslands to do some painting on location. The sunflowers are amazing in the way that they follow the sun so entire fields of flowers are all smiling at you at once!

KMD2494 Mighty Oak (Oak tree, landscape, Texas, original fine art)

How I love the Columbine, Colorado's state flower. It is so delicate composed of beautiful whites and lavenders with the contrasting bright yellow centers, usually growing in and amongst our aspen trees but also in the high mountain basins.
Every year it is fun to anticipate their bloom.

KMD2490 Washington Park Boathouse

SOLD

This was a commission done of an historic landmark here in Denver. This boathouse in located on Smith Lake in Washington Park. The boathouse pavilion in Wash Park also bears a bit of history and unique influence. Designed in 1913 by Jacques Benedict, the pavilion was based on the 17th century pavilion of Kara Mustafa Pasa at Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. Today, the boathouse can be rented out for events or just enjoyed by us artists as a wonderful subject to paint.

KMD2491 Spring's Bounty (floral, poppy, garden, original fine art)

SOLD

While perusing some old photos I came across one taken in Seattle on Queen's Hill several years ago. The gardens there are so lush in that moist climate, an envy to us Coloradans, but then I prefer the sunshine and difficult growing seasons here to overcast and rain. It makes traveling to the northwest a much appreciated treasure!
