This painting started as a warm up exercise. I painted over a painting I was not happy with and did this with very heavy strokes of paint on my brush and palette knife. I really like the mood of this piece as it reflects the warm glowing light I found in the scene that I photographed in Santa Fe many years ago. I have always wanted to paint this scene and don't know why the photo sat in a box for so long before I decided to paint it. As the photo was taken pre-digital it shows how long I have had it laying around!

I painted this scene from a photo I took along the Columbia River in Oregon on my way to the coast. The Northwest is such a visual treat to a native Coloradoan as myself with all the water and atmospheric scenes.

Where does the time go? I haven't posted for several weeks and don't know how I let so much time slip away. With fall in the air now I am feeling more energized and ready to start a new painting season. This is a scene from the Hill Country in Texas where I went several years ago in search of the illustrious Bluebonnets. It wasn't a banner year but we still found great scenes like this one. I love the nostalgia of the railroad tracks reminding us of days gone by while the flowers continue to bloom year after year.

I am anxious to create more of these vibrant mixed media pieces as they have gotten such a positive response. The poly resin I have poured on top of the painting makes the colors rich and saturated, far beyond what a varnish does. This is one I wish you might see in person as the blues in the lower half of the little triptych are iridescent and I think the composition leaves the viewer with lots to ponder in their own imaginations.

Wow, it has been a long time since I have posted. It has been so busy getting ready for our 10th Anniversary Show at Brushstrokes and then the Governor's Invitational (where I sold out!!!!!!) At last I can focus on my online postings and now prepare all my new works for the Art Student's League Summer Festival in June. This painting is one for our 10th Anniversary show. I photographed this scene several years ago while visiting Arles in France (where Van Gogh painted Starry Night Over the Rhone and Café Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, at Night). It was a memorable trip as I had my purse stolen outside of Arles with all my credit cards and ID including my passport. To make a long story short, after some intense panic my passport found its way back to me. A miracle I will never forget.

Spring is really here, early this year getting me into the floral mode for painting. I was struggling for a title for this painting to do it justice so I looked up the definition of crimson to find the word Razzmatazz and loved the way it rolls off the tongue.
Perfect! I loved the very deep rich reds and crimsons in this beautiful poppy and challenged myself to paint it in acrylic!

I finally got back to the easel this week after returning from my trip to Kauai. I photographed this little fellow in between rain showers while getting a tour of the beautiful island. I discovered that this Red Crested Cardinal is also known as the Brazilian Cardinal and it was introduced around 1930 from South America. They move very quickly making it a challenge to get a good photo. I was happy to get this pose to paint.

I have just returned from a very wet but relaxing trip to Kauai. I had painted this piece before leaving and am planning to do some of my small daily paintings this week inspired from my trip.
This painting was created from a small abstract I painted as a study for a larger one. The real joy in this kind of painting is letting it take its own course using my original study only as a starting point. It is such a fun journey working from the intuitive.

It is difficult to describe how I create my abstract paintings as it is such an intuitive process. Of course my results are a culmination of life experience and everything I have been exposed to in addition to all the art I peruse looking for inspiration. This painting evolved seemingly into a landscape and I let it "paint itself" once I saw a direction in it. I am off to some great adventures on Kauai with my good friends Connie and Pat. This painting was inspired from a small abstract that I created with my oil paints. Whenever I finish one of my oil paintings, I use the remaining paint to create a small abstract. I then choose my favorites of these to use as inspiration for my larger abstract paintings. It is such a great journey from leftover paints to a final creation. I never quite know where I will end. I really love the colors in this one.
