KMD2266 Sunlit from Heaven
I am having such fun painting all these bright spring and summer gardens as the days get shorter and colder! But, alas, we are about to the shortest day of the year. HOORAY. I also wanted to shake it up and see how I do with acrylics, which this is what I used to paint this one.

KMD2265 Wonders of Nature
SOLD
Here are some Icelandic poppies that were so beautifully lit I couldn't resist taking their photo. They have been speaking to me to paint them for some time now. The colors are so vibrant and reminiscent of last July's warmer days!

KMD2264 Graceful Harmony
SOLD
I painted this little scene because I loved how soft and graceful the poppies appear against the green background where the viewer can imagine the actual greenery. I love to challenge my design skills by focusing on a close up view of a garden and create a pleasing composition that will keep the viewer engaged.

KMD2263 Bathed in Afternoon Light
I just had to paint this tree again, but a different composition. The late day light so low on the tree just intrigued me and spoke to me to paint. Nature provides such a bounty of subjects to paint in hopes of capturing the moment in time that I see and want to preserve.

KMD2262 Painted Sonnet
SOLD
Here is a poppy painting seemingly like the last one I did but from an entirely different garden. Sometimes I scare myself that I find the same compositions and related scenes in very different places. I guess it shows what I am passionate about!

KMD2261 Free, Joyous and Vibrant
SOLD
I am getting many requests for my poppy paintings which of course is not a problem for me! It is such fun to look through my reference pictures and relive so many wonderful trips here and abroad, most of them with my good friend Pat who spends as much time as I do photographing everything in sight. These poppies were found a few summers back as we drove to Nederland, Colorado on our way to the Peak to Peak highway going to Estes Park.

KMD260 Last Rays of the Day
Week before last I was invited to a client's ranch outside of Steamboat Springs, Colorado and found it to be a feast of pictures, even in winter where I found the colors so warm in the brush and willows that were found along the Elk River. We were driven all around the property on an ATV...I got to drive one which was a huge thrill. That is where this painting was inspired.

Let's see, poppies......aspen.......poppies.....aspen. Looks like poppies won out for today's choice to paint. These are so bright, warm and joyful that I had to paint them on this very cold, snowy day here in Denver.

KMD2258 This Must be Heaven
SOLD
Besides my love for flowers and florals I do have a fascination with trees, their infinite variety of shapes and all the colors they present throughout the year. This beauty was found in a park in Kansas City with the late afternoon sun bathing it and casting long beautiful shadows. This is my favorite time of day as the world settles down plus incredible photo opportunities.

KMD2257 Gold Rush
I seem to be stuck painting in gold! I am drawn to all of my incredible fall pictures and these yellow poppies which are so alive, bright and filled with sunlight. They make me feel warm and in awe of their beauty at the same time! I guess it is especially nostalgic as I watch the snow falling outside today.

KMD2256 Warm and Glowing
While in Kansas City last month I photographed some beautiful trees aglow in their fall colors. I not only was drawn to the incredible fall colors of reds, oranges, yellows and every warm hue in between but the great shape and form of the trees. It is such fun to recreate on canvas the warm feeling I experience with the sun lighting up the fall trees.

KMD2255 Walk the Talk
Here is a little departure from my norm. I was fascinated with the reflections in the shiny floors at the Denver Art Musuem reflecting the various visitors who were visiting , wandering, looking, studying all the wonderful art. This piece is painted on stretched canvas on one inch stretcher bars with the image wrapping around the sides.

KM2248 Mirror Image
I have been busy painting for our holiday show at Brushstrokes Studio Gallery here in Denver. This is one of a series I am doing for the gallery, hence the size and price which are different than my daily painting offerings. I have been looking for new ways to see and express myself and have gotten really excited about viewing reflections of people in art museum floors where the final painting tells the story of the moment without defining all of the elements. I will be offering some as daily paintings again when I get caught up!

KMD2247 Pretty in Pink
SOLD
I found these pink poppies in a garden once again, in Crested Butte, Colorado. I was drawn to the blue background that made the flowers stand out and enriched their amazing colors. To the eye the flowers are pink but oh what an amazing spectrum of subtle pinks, oranges and yellows within the petals.

KMD2243 Dancing in the Sun
SOLD
There seems to be a renewed interest in my poppies which of course I love to paint. Perhaps as winter comes on and our surroundings succumb to the duller colors of winter (until the snow flies that is) it is nice to have the reminder of the colorful days of summer. It is for me as I look through my reference for subject matter to paint.

KMD2241 Esteemed Golden Poppies
SOLD
I thought perhaps I should show that I do paint more than red poppies!!!
I was enthralled with the golden yellow poppies in this garden that were surrounded and contrasted with the wild delicate small flowers growing all around them. Maybe next spring I will get to California to see and photograph their beautiful state flower in full bloom.

KMD2240 Wild and Free
SOLD
These poppies were growing at our mountain cabin here in Colorado. In 2000 our place burned down in one of our terrible fires but since then has been rebuilt and once again we are very fortunate to have a little piece of heaven to escape to from the busy city life here in Denver. These poppies came up the year after the fire and are testament to how beautifully Nature regenerates herself and life moves on and beauty endures.

I find poppies everywhere I go. My favorite times to travel and photograph are in the spring and fall when the poppies are lighting up the landscape in spring and the aspen are aglow in yellows, oranges and reds. Obviously, I never get tired of painting these incredible subjects.

KMD2238 Glorious Fall Day
SOLD
I can't resist the golden trees nor the meadows of such warm glorious ochres, oranges and yellows that come alive in the fall here in Colorado. Just today I was walking my dog and just appreciating the brilliantly sunlit yellow leaves contrasted against our deep blue Colorado skies. I always hope my paintings can preserve these magical moments.

KMD2236 A Day at the Museum
SOLD
Last weekend I was visiting in Kansas City looking for fall tree reference. Since the fall colors still hadn't peaked we went to the Nelson Atkins Art Museum. What a treat for me, it is a beautiful museum and of course I had my camera and recorded this Mom with her 2 kids studying the large Monet painting. It was a must to paint!

KM2009 Golden Glow
This little oil painting was inspired from a scene while traveling in Montana outside of the town of Bigfork which is near Flathead Lake. This scene of the late day light was found between Bigfork and the entrance to West Glacier National Park. It was the time of day when the sun is going down, the day is cooling off and everything just glows.

I have painted a scene from this garden before but am drawn back to it because of the brilliant reds in the poppies surrounded by wild grasses and foliage. I love gardens that are just a little out of control that seem to express themselves as well as the intent of the gardener.

KMD2234 Lone Star
I am beginning to catch up a bit and have been wanting to paint this little poppy since my September trip in search of the turning aspen here in Colorado. This poppy was so hardy and the last one left blooming in the cool fall days sitting adjacent to some aspen trees that I came across early in the morning in Crested Butte.

KM2030 Bursting in Vibrance
SOLD
This small oil painting is a looser interpretation of one of my favorite flowers-the poppy. I have painted many of these red European poppies and each time I do I like to look for new ways to interpret them. This floral was painted in a more abstract manner leaving the background loose in shape and form and letting the brilliant color of the flower to carry the composition.

SOLD
I have been getting ready for our show here at Brushstrokes Gallery so have fallen behind in the daily paintings! I took this photo last summer in Crested Butte and loved the subtle reflection of the poppies in the window. KM2222 Golden Days of Fall
This is a study for a larger piece that I plan to put in our upcoming show at Brushstrokes Studio on October 17. We found this scene when coming off of Ohio Pass outside of Crested Butte last weekend. Ironically, my good friend Pat had been there the day before photographing and suggested we take a look ourselves. I had never gone over that pass and it was an incredible find. Of course, last weekend was just prime for fall colors and changing leaves and was awesome everywhere we went. Perfect Colorado days.

Here is my first of many to come from my trip here in Colorado in search of gold! I can't wait to get to more of my photos to keep living the incredible weekend of being surrounded by warm sun glowing thru all the yellow, orange and red Aspen leaves.
Also, the Daily Painters are all posting a painting with orange on Wednesday so go check it out there as well: Daily Painters Website

KM2219 Blue Door
I found this scene last year while in Greece wandering around the island of Hydra.
We arrived there by boat from Napflio, our home base. We spent the morning exploring the many narrow cobblestone streets where there are no vehicles and only burros for transportation. We were so entranced that we actually got lost and almost missed the boat home which wouldn't have been a problem for me as I still had lots more pictures to find!
