KMD2997 Pepper Red by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (still life 5x75x7, vegetable, pepper, red pepper)

In the last month I have taken a hiatus from painting after an incredible year of shows and commissions. I have spent the last month having great times catching up with so many friends, past and present.
I am in the process of filling the well again with new ideas for what I am going to create in the New Year. No perfectly formulated ideas yet, but stay tuned as I search for new ways to express myself on canvas.
Meanwhile, I did paint these bell peppers as they are so bright and colorful and gave me a chance to revisit the old days of painting a still life.

KMD2991 Iris by Denver, Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (7x5" original oil floral Iris flower)

KMD2991
Iris

This is a painting done as a gift for someone who loves Iris. They are a beautiful
flower that I have not painted much in the past. I love how delicate
they are yet they are such showy flowers; growing with so many different color varieties.
I am inspired to paint more of these beautiful marvels of nature to show in my studio here at
Brushstrokes Fine Art Gallery in Denver.

KMA2961 Orange Zest by Colorado Contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (12x12 acrylic, abstract floral still life)

SOLD
This is another of my abstract floral still life paintings that was done as an exploration into creating paintings that have less detail but say more. It is a challenge to work mostly intuitively on these. Many of these start with some sort of reference but soon take on their own lives once I let go and let them dictate the direction. I have this painting at my Denver art gallery and studio, Brushstrokes Studio-Gallery. Now that summer is coming to an end and I finish my great commissions, I will be getting back to more of these as they indeed, do challenge me!

KMD2989 Wildflower Medley by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7, oil, landscape, wildflowers)

SOLD
I have another plethora of pictures from Crested Butte taken last month when the wildflowers were at their peak. Every hillside was an array of either purples or yellows and a feast for the eyes. This scene was on the road between the town of Crested Butte and the ski area. My friend Pat and I spent quite a bit of time trying to capture every square inch of this scene on our cameras!

KMA2981 Morning Prelude by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (acrylic, 10x10, abstract landscape)

This is an exploration into abstracting a landscape using my acrylic paints on a wood panel board. I applied a texture base on it before starting to paint it. I then used many layers of paint on the texture to create some interesting effects as the brush skips over the raised portions of the texture leaving paint marks in unexpected shapes. My challenge was to create an interpretation of the landscape without a lot of definition, the old "less is more" philosophy. Once I am finished with some great commissions that I am working on, I plan to tackle more of these intuitive paintings.

KMA2974 Unfolding by Colorado fine artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (10x10, acrylic, abstract floral still life painting)

SOLD
This still life abstract painting was created using layer upon layer of acrylic on a textured 1" panel board. It was created intuitively from memories of the many pastel floral still life paintings I created in pastels years ago. This is one of the abstracts shown last month in my solo show here at Brushstrokes Studio-Gallery in Denver, CO. I used complimentary colors of blues and oranges to create a real atmosphere with the darker background enhancing the poppy like flowers flowing out of the dark vase. These intuitive paintings do challenge me after the many years of painting from my photo reference where there is an end in sight!

KM2985 Luscious Moment by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (16x8 oil painting on linen, floral)

This floral was created to hang in my show last month as one in a series of 3 florals in the strong vertical format which gives some interesting and new compositional approaches. I love capturing a moment in time when photographing close up giving such importance to just one or two flowers as opposed to a landscape. Be on the look out for a new series from my trip last week to Crested Butte, Colorado where I spent 4 days photographing perhaps every flower blooming there!

KM2984 Paradise Revisited by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (16x8, oil, floral, garden, poppy)

Here is a return to the past as I still love painting poppies. I thought a tall vertical would be a fun composition. It was painted for my recent solo show at Brushstrokes Studio. I enjoyed revisiting an old friend in the form of a local Denver garden reference that I never tire of painting from.

KM2980 Twilight’s Magic by Colorado Artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (30x40, oil, landscape, Moab, Southern Utah, sunset, dusk)

SOLD
I came upon this scene on the way into Moab,Utah last October just as the sun had dropped behind the mountains. It was a magical moment filled with a rainbow of saturated purples, blues and reds. I had to paint this with a brush rather than palette knife as this piece isn't about texture but about expressing the calm magic of twilight when all the busyness of the day’s events set with the sun. For me it is the best time of day as the world seemingly comes to a halt and peace reigns.

KM2939 Cosmic Purpose by Colorado fine artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (60x48, landscape, Rabbit brush, textural, oil painting, southern Utah, desert, foiliage)

This is the first painting created for my solo show at Brushstrokes Studio-Gallery here in Denver, Colorado. This scene was so beautiful when I came upon it, with the rich sages, yellows and purples along with the textures and backlighting that I knew it would be the first painting I would create for my show "The Journey Home" The show opens tomorrow and will run for a week. I am very excited to present textural paintings from Southern Utah and explorations into abstraction.

The Journey Home Solo Show Kit Hevron Mahoney (fine art abstract and representational oil and acrylic paintings)

I am one day away from my solo show at Brushstrokes. It has been an exciting and challenging journey to create a body of works, both abstract and representational. I chose to do a series of paintings from a photo trip taken last October, ostensibly to the National Parks in Utah. However, the government shutdown foiled that plan but my friend Pat and I were not to be deterred and found some of the most beautiful scenes outside of the parks. My representational works are based on what we found and photographed.
My venture into the abstract paintings is on ongoing venture where I start with a photo reference or still life floral but soon let the painting take the lead. This intuitive process is done in acrylic where I feel I can experiment with lots of different substrates in addition to the paints themselves.
If you live in Denver, please stop by Brushstrokes Studio-Gallery tomorrow and see what my journey has been!

KMD2950 Pondering Clifford Still by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7 original oil, figurative, museum, Clifford Still)

It has been awhile since I have made time to post. I have been busy painting commissions, learning new computer software and I am now getting back to focusing on my upcoming solo show "The Journey Home - A Painting Odyssey" at Brushstrokes Studio-Gallery. (opening on June 21, 2014). We are having a big spring snowstorm here in Denver today, so I am using it as an excuse to stay home, warm and have a catch up day. I shot this subject while visiting the Clifford Still Museum here in Denver. I went to the museum thinking I would not be enthralled with his work but was very surprised to find that much of his work intrigued me! Here is someone enjoying and studying it too!

KMD2948 Endless Summer by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7, oil, landscape, Moab, Utah, autumn, floral landscape)

SOLD
This painting is a study for a larger piece to come. It was a scene found south of Moab while traveling last fall with my great friend and photographer Pat. We screeched to a stop when we saw the most amazing morning light on the fall blooming Rabbit Brush with the blue, blue mountains and sky in the distance. We photographed every square inch of this beautiful scene!

KMD2947 Innocent Curiosity by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (7x5 original oil, lamb, sheep, animal)

SOLD
While out photographing the wildflowers at Crested Butte a few summers ago, we came upon a herd of sheep wandering with their herder on the road. My eyes met this fellow's eyes and his ears seem to express his surprise and curiosity!

This painting is from a reference photo taken quiet a few years ago when I traveled to Italy which is one of my favorite places to go in Europe. KMD2944 Ocotillo by Colorado fine artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7 original oil, Ocotillo, desert, Arizona, landscape, cactus)

As I am reviving my small painting routine it is such a fun journey going through my photo reference of many years. It makes me so grateful for all the amazing places I have been privileged to travel to and experience through the lens of my camera. I lived in Arizona many years ago and became acquainted and enamored with the desert landscape. The Ocotillo is one of my favorite blooming cactus as depicted in this small painting.

KMD2943 Morning in the Village by Colorado fine artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (7x5 oil, urban, cityscape, Europe, Germany)

SOLD

It is a fun change getting back to these small paintings again. Most of what I am painting now is for my show in June, all of which is larger and takes much longer to finish, therefore, these small ones give me a faster sense of completion and also prime me for subjects I might want to do larger. This scene is from a photo taken while in Germany many years ago and has been in my folder of "painting possibilities" for some time now. I loved the afternoon light on the buildings in this narrow street we wandered upon. Of course, I no longer remember which city we were in.

KMD2942 July's Abundance by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7 original oil, wildflower landscape, floral, Crested Butte, CO)

SOLD
I have photographed this scene many times while visiting Crested Butte, Colorado during the wildflower season in July. It is one of the most spectacular areas in Colorado where the hills are literally seas of color. I don't know why I have waited so long to paint this particular shot since I have stopped at this same sight every year to capture it with my camera. Finally, I have interpreted it on canvas!

KMD2941 Fleeting by Colorado Fine artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (7x5, original oil, floral, poppies)

SOLD
I had to come back to my all time favorite, the poppy. With winter holding on so tight this year it is fun to look through all my colorful spring reference in anticipation of the longer, brighter and more colorful days ahead. The wilder garden makes painting such a free process with no real structure but an abundance of color and texture to play with.

KMD2940 Grazing by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (7x5 oil, animal, horse, landscape, original oil)

SOLD
After quite a hiatus from my small paintings I am returning to posting again. I needed a paint break to regroup after a busy 2013 filled with many large commissions, all of which were a joy to create. I am having fun going through all my photos to see what floats my cork to paint now. I found this beautiful scene last year in Kauai of all places (not where I would go looking for horses!) This year promises to be a busy one as each of us at Brushstrokes is doing a solo show. I will have my show on June 21 so stay tuned as I continue solidifying my ideas for the show.
