I was commissioned to paint a 48x60 abstract mountain scene that didn't have too many bright colors (a challenge for me!) I did almost the entire painting with a large palette knife and one stroke with a huge brush loaded with gobs of paint. This was such fun experimenting with acrylics and the unforgiving palette knife tool.
I can't wait to get back to more experimentation.

KMD2565 Jewel (dog, pet portrait, animal)
This is a portrait I did for a client as a gift to their parents for Christmas this year. I did not meet Jewel and painted her from a photo but she looked like a sweet being and it was a gift for me to get to paint her.

KMD2573 Cold Clear Day (Bluejay, birds, wildlife, winter)
I photographed this fellow one Christmas day several years ago at my sister's house in Fort Collins, Colorado. It was a very cold, crisp clear Colorado day and this one was awaiting his turn at the feeder, puffing up his feathers to ward off the cold.
I love the blues of his plumage with the Colorado blue skies.
Some trivia: Blue Jays can make a large variety of sounds, and they may learn to mimic human speech. Blue Jays can also copy the cries of local hawks so well that it is sometimes difficult to tell which it is.

KM2520 Summer's Last Hurrah
I have been busy painting some more abstracted images to be placed in a spec home in Avon, Colorado so have not been tending to the daily paintings which I miss doing. I found that I had not posted this painting done last month which is a larger floral. With the warm December days we have had here in Denver it almost feels like this is a more appropriate subject even though Christmas is only days away!

KMD2567 Waiting for an Answer (birds, animals, ornithology, original oil painting)
SOLD
I have really been on a kick for the little birds, a symbol to me of freedom and sweet music. They are so entertaining as they dance around the bird feeder, sometimes not so patiently, waiting their turn.I love waking up in the Springtime to the symphony of sounds that all the birds are making outside. Some mornings it is so loud that I can't hear the radio which is not a bad thing! I turn off the news and just listen to them trying to distinguish the many different sounds.

KM2566 Dancing in Illusion (abstract painting)
I have been creating some abstract paintings and am really happy about how this one came out. It is a challenge going abstract as there is a beginning, but finding the end can be a challenge.

KMD2565 Gentle Giant (buffalo, animal, wildlife, bison, original fine art)
I don't know why, but lately as I peruse my for painting ideas, I am moved to paint animals. I have never painted a buffalo so decided it was time. What is it that is so romantic about the mighty buffalo? They really aren't pretty animals but they are powerful and hold such a nostalgia in our psyche, I suppose reminiscent of the freedom days on the prairie.

KMD2564 Chick a Dee Dee Dee (songbird, birds, wildlife, original art)
SOLD
This little Chickadee is titled after the sound these wonderful little birds make. They are wonderful little songbirds and here is a bit of trivia about them: On cold winter nights, these birds reduce their body temperature by up to 10-12 °C to conserve energy. I am on a bird run as they are such wonderful creatures and I hope my paintings are the next best thing to having them with us.7"x5" unframed original oil

KM2557 On Top of the World (landscape, autumn, fall, aspen, original fine art)
I found these vertical canvas in my inventory and had a great time finding an image that spoke to the size and shape of it. It is always fun to break out of the habit of painting to standard sizes.

KMD2563 Oh So Brilliant (bird, wildlife,
SOLD
As I get older I am becoming my Grandmother who loved the birds. I have become a bird lover(not expert by any means!) and follow the seasons with their songs. I especially love spring when they are an amazing chorus singing outside my window. With winter and a bird feeder I still see them flitting about and hear their songs, but not nearly the chorus we hear in spring. I found the reference for this little guy and loved the amazing color. Nature provides and combines colors beyond imagination.

KMD2562 Surely You Jest (horse, animal, original fine art)
I just couldn't resist this humorous face on my sister's horse. I was attempting to get a photo that I could use to paint a portrait of him but captured this funny face in the process. It just makes me laugh to see him as though he too is tickled about something.
