Yes, you did see this composition the other day, but not this one. This was another study done for my painting class but this one had the original white linen background whereas, the other day it was toned with an orange background. It is fun to see what a difference a background tone makes for the same painting. Each has its own merits.

KMD2317 Around the Next Bend

I have wanted to paint this scene since last summer when I photographed it outside of Lake City, Colorado. I went there with my infamous travel companion, Pat, after a harrowing ride in my sport utility up a really rough 4 wheel drive road. We were attempting to drive the Alpine Loop to the American Basin that hosts a plethora of wildflowers. Unfortunately we missed the flowers as there had been such a huge snowfall that the snow was still melting there!

This is a scene that I created in pastels from a trip I took several years ago to Savannah, Georgia. We were there during the Azalea bloom which was so magnificent that if I painted most of the flower scenes I found there, no one in Colorado would believe the rich abundance of blooms there. The combination of amazing architecture, rich history and lush display of trees and flowering plants was absolutely breathtaking.

I have found another wonderful photo taken several years ago while visiting my stepson in Seattle. My husband and I took the ferry to the San Juan Island where we found this incredible scene. My favorite thing to do in the Northwest is to ride the Ferry boats to wherever they may take me! It is amazing how many places in the world that poppies grow and thrive!

The Daily Painters Gallery has a first Wednesday of the month theme and challenge. This month's theme is "Reflections." The first image that came to mind for me was the day I was in Paris (my first trip to Europe thanks to my good friend Pat) and it rained intermittently throughout our first day there. That left wonderful reflections when the sun came out right after the rain. I loved the small child leading the way in this scene!

I have had this photo reference for many years; pre-digital! It is from a trip taken to Taos, New Mexico years ago. I have of course been there many times since and am excited that I will be going back in April to reunite with some old college buddies.
I was drawn to the blues in the mailboxes contrasted with the earthy fall colors behind them. They almost seem alive waiting in anticipation for the mail carrier.

Back to the flowers. I loved how delicate these pink poppies seemed. They are amazing flowers, so delicate yet so resilient. I found these gems at the Denver Botanic Gardens last year and here we are heading fast into yet another spring. Living near the mountains here in Colorado makes the water and boats such a unique entity. I found these colorful boats were in Italy when visiting with my business partners several years ago. This area, Cinque Terre is on the Mediterranean and every boat is a painting waiting to be created. Boats are a challenge to paint, they have such sensuous lines that they are almost like painting the figure.
