KMD3071 Pink Poppies by Colorado Contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7 oil pink poppy garden)

SOLD

Poppies still remain one of my most favorite flowers to paint. I came across these on an early morning walk last month with my dog Farley who impatiently waited as I photographed them. (He has much different preferences on our walks!)
There is nothing more invigorating than the cool, fresh spring and summer mornings with dew on all the new flowers and the abundance of new life everywhere. I think spring is my most favorite season, followed by fall which is reflected in so much of my work.

This is a colorful summer floral painted from a photograph taken in New Brunswick,Canada while attending a photography workshop. I loved the richness and lusciousness captured in the photo and fell I have translated that to this painting.

KM3005 Lucious by Denver Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (24x36 oil, garden, poppies)

This is another commission that was painted for the new Banner Health being built in Fort Collins, CO. I am thrilled to have been commissioned to do 4 paintings for them. It is rewarding to have paintings placed where they are used to uplift.

Recently I was asked why I paint the subjects I am drawn to. After much thought I realize that my place in this world is to communicate the beauty of this world. I feel that is who I am as an artist. I have fought being a person that makes "pretty" pictures throughout my career and now realize that I want to add beauty, joy and positive energy to the world and not anything negative.

Poppy gardens and paintings are one of my signature subjects. Although we still have snow on the ground it is fun to anticipate spring being right around the corner here in Denver and all those poppies are getting ready for another season to inspire.

KMD2996 Night Vendor by Denver Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (6x6 oil, France, Aix en Provence, urban oil painting)

SOLD

I have not posted in months!!!! Between commissions, the holidays and just wanting to take a break from my painting life I have let my posting fall by the wayside. I am back now and setting a goal to post once or twice a week.
This scene was found while traveling in France quite a few years ago. It has been in my folder of favorite images that I have set aside to paint for quite some time. We were looking for a place to have dinner when I came across this scene as the sun was setting and evening setting in. The scene drew me in immediately as the hush of evening comes on.

KMD2997 Pepper Red by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (still life 5x75x7, vegetable, pepper, red pepper)

In the last month I have taken a hiatus from painting after an incredible year of shows and commissions. I have spent the last month having great times catching up with so many friends, past and present.
I am in the process of filling the well again with new ideas for what I am going to create in the New Year. No perfectly formulated ideas yet, but stay tuned as I search for new ways to express myself on canvas.
Meanwhile, I did paint these bell peppers as they are so bright and colorful and gave me a chance to revisit the old days of painting a still life.

KMA2981 Morning Prelude by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (acrylic, 10x10, abstract landscape)

This is an exploration into abstracting a landscape using my acrylic paints on a wood panel board. I applied a texture base on it before starting to paint it. I then used many layers of paint on the texture to create some interesting effects as the brush skips over the raised portions of the texture leaving paint marks in unexpected shapes. My challenge was to create an interpretation of the landscape without a lot of definition, the old "less is more" philosophy. Once I am finished with some great commissions that I am working on, I plan to tackle more of these intuitive paintings.
