Poppies still remain one of my most favorite flowers to paint. I came across these on an early morning walk last month with my dog Farley who impatiently waited as I photographed them. (He has much different preferences on our walks!)
There is nothing more invigorating than the cool, fresh spring and summer mornings with dew on all the new flowers and the abundance of new life everywhere. I think spring is my most favorite season, followed by fall which is reflected in so much of my work.

Last fall I was driving through Vail, Colorado in early October. This was a scene I shot from the car in the morning right after a light rain fall when the sun came out and lit the tops of some of the aspen trees. I went to school at the University of Colorado many years ago and never missed a day of looking at the view of the amazing rock formations in my then backyard. This painting is a mixture of my representational and abstract styles. It is a rich mixture of textures created using a palette knife with some brush work. I have painted it for our 10th Anniversary Show at Brushstrokes on April 27. It has been really busy here as I get ready for the Brushstrokes show and the Colorado Governor's Invitational Art Show and Sale that opens on April 28th. Continuing with with abstract art, I am creating miniature images from my oils leftover at the end of my painting day. This is one in a series of three. I love to see what my palette looks like with all the leftover piles of color from creating a larger representational painting. I finally got back to the easel this week after returning from my trip to Kauai. I photographed this little fellow in between rain showers while getting a tour of the beautiful island. I discovered that this Red Crested Cardinal is also known as the Brazilian Cardinal and it was introduced around 1930 from South America. They move very quickly making it a challenge to get a good photo. I was happy to get this pose to paint.

After painting for our show "Identity Theft" here at Brushstrokes Studio Gallery here in Denver I had a great desire to be with my favorite poppies. It has been a really fun challenge to paint still life and roosters but I am also getting spring fever, which means everything is starting to bloom. So, I am itching to photograph and paint more florals. Here is a beautiful scene found from last year's poppy bloom as I couldn't wait for this year's bloom which is just around the corner.
