KMD3071 Pink Poppies by Colorado Contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7 oil pink poppy garden)

SOLD

Poppies still remain one of my most favorite flowers to paint. I came across these on an early morning walk last month with my dog Farley who impatiently waited as I photographed them. (He has much different preferences on our walks!)
There is nothing more invigorating than the cool, fresh spring and summer mornings with dew on all the new flowers and the abundance of new life everywhere. I think spring is my most favorite season, followed by fall which is reflected in so much of my work.

KM2985 Luscious Moment by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (16x8 oil painting on linen, floral)

This floral was created to hang in my show last month as one in a series of 3 florals in the strong vertical format which gives some interesting and new compositional approaches. I love capturing a moment in time when photographing close up giving such importance to just one or two flowers as opposed to a landscape. Be on the look out for a new series from my trip last week to Crested Butte, Colorado where I spent 4 days photographing perhaps every flower blooming there!

KM2984 Paradise Revisited by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (16x8, oil, floral, garden, poppy)

Here is a return to the past as I still love painting poppies. I thought a tall vertical would be a fun composition. It was painted for my recent solo show at Brushstrokes Studio. I enjoyed revisiting an old friend in the form of a local Denver garden reference that I never tire of painting from.

KMD2835 Of Days Gone By by Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7 original oil landscape)

Where does the time go? I haven't posted for several weeks and don't know how I let so much time slip away. With fall in the air now I am feeling more energized and ready to start a new painting season. This is a scene from the Hill Country in Texas where I went several years ago in search of the illustrious Bluebonnets. It wasn't a banner year but we still found great scenes like this one. I love the nostalgia of the railroad tracks reminding us of days gone by while the flowers continue to bloom year after year.

KMD2820 Cascading Cosmos (5x7 floral, oil)

SOLD

I have had this picture in my pile of "want to paint" for a long time now. I came across it in my files that I was perusing as I was looking for another reference photo. It is good to do some housecleaning now and again for there are wonderful surprises to be found that have been totally forgotten. This is such a joyous scene as are cosmos to begin with.

KMD2814 Spring's Gift by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7, oil, floral)

SOLD
I am stuck on what to say today as far as why I painted this little poppy piece except it, of course, is one of my favorite subjects and a nice break from all the works I am preparing for the upcoming Art Market that is just around the corner now! Poppies provide me with brilliant color and just make me feel happy!

KMD2735 Perception in Red (6x8, floral)

SOLD
With winter still coming on strong here in Denver (once again it is snowing as remnants of the last snow had almost melted off) I look into images that will bring spring closer. So, of course I reach for my familiar and favorite; poppies. This piece was inspired from a picture taken in Estes Park, Colorado where there was a full garden of these delightful red gems.

KM2623 Spring's Renewal (poppies, landscape, floral landscape)

SOLD
As I look around my gallery I see that most of my florals are gone and I need to replace my many fall paintings with the excitement of spring. This is one I have created inspired from my spring journey to the Texas Hill Country. Although I went in search of the bluebonnets, which were rare this year, there was still plenty of beauty to be found.

KMD2549 Wild Poppies (floral, garden, landscape, orignal oil painting)

SOLD
Had to come back to the colorful poppies now that winter is really setting in here in Denver. We have had the longest, warmest, most colorful fall here in Denver that I ever remember. It started snowing today just to remind us that nothing is forever! That is one of the reasons I paint, naively thinking that I can save a moment in time.

KM2476 Spring Bouquet (floral, still life, flowers, sunflower)

SOLD
I haven't done a floral still life since my pastel painting days. This was such fun to do because of the bright, spring colors and such a joyful combination of flowers bringing our much delayed spring into the studio.

KM2475 It Must be Spring (floral, poppies, garden, flowers, original oil)

SOLD
After painting for our show "Identity Theft" here at Brushstrokes Studio Gallery here in Denver I had a great desire to be with my favorite poppies. It has been a really fun challenge to paint still life and roosters but I am also getting spring fever, which means everything is starting to bloom. So, I am itching to photograph and paint more florals. Here is a beautiful scene found from last year's poppy bloom as I couldn't wait for this year's bloom which is just around the corner.
