Here is another poppy painting rendered using only brushes as opposed to my palette knife work. I was especially drawn to the pastel colors of these delicate yet so hardy flowers. It is fun to have a variety of tools to use to express myself through my art.

KMA2639 Element and Shade (abstract, mixed media, original art
Another in my newest explorations into the abstract. This painting has many layers of color and texture creating a mysterious mood. Painting in the abstract is a new challenge, working from the intuitive and letting the painting lead me to the solution. The hardest part is knowing when to stop!

KMA2637 Kinetic Eye (abstract, mixed media, original art)
Here is the first in a series of exciting new abstract mixed media paintings that I am embarking upon. This painting is finished with a poured resin surface that creates amazing depth and color as a final finish. The photograph here was taken before applying the resin as it is difficult to get a good picture off of the shiny surface of the resin finish. I will gladly photograph it with the resin for anyone who is interested. You will be seeing more of these little gems as I am having such fun exploring a new world of color, shape and texture. Working in the abstract is a great new challenge and departure from my representational works. What fun to have so many choices as an artist!

KM2625 Horse Humor (horse, animal, livestock)
This painting was also painted for Evergreen Fine Art Gallery where I show in addition to my own gallery, Brushstrokes. They are having a show in conjunction with the Intermountain Horse Association and this show is a benefit for 3 different horse organizations that they support. Once again, I thank my sister for the reference material and am so glad she loves to do the care and feeding so I only have to click the shutter!

After painting so many poppies you would think I would be lacking for something to say about them, but they just make me feel good with their brilliant, warm and hot colors and delicate but hardy nature. I find the time spent painting them always uplifts me.5"x7" unframed original oil

KMD2626 Springtime Wonders ( poppy, floral, garden, flower)
I am getting drawn back to the poppies as they are soon to bloom. The crabapples are fading along with the colorful tulips, lilacs are next and overlapping them are the poppies and iris. I had to jump start from a photo from our Botanic Gardens taken a few springtimes back.

KM2623 Spring's Renewal (poppies, landscape, floral landscape)
SOLD
As I look around my gallery I see that most of my florals are gone and I need to replace my many fall paintings with the excitement of spring. This is one I have created inspired from my spring journey to the Texas Hill Country. Although I went in search of the bluebonnets, which were rare this year, there was still plenty of beauty to be found.20"x16" unframed original oil

KMD2621 Curious One (cow, cattle, animal)
SOLD
While hunting for the elusive bluebonnets in Texas this spring, I found lots of other subject matter to photograph. Being a city girl, I don't really know my cows other than responding to their curious looks and sweet gentle faces. This fellow was curious and posed for a long time while I fired off the shutter to find just the look I wanted to paint.

KMD2620 Spring Poppies (floral, landscape, poppies, red poppies)
Just returned from a week in the Hill Country of Texas where I had hoped to find a great bloom of Bluebonnets but it was a dry year so we had to focus on other subjects when we weren't enjoying just being at my friend Julie's incredible "resort". We went to the Ladybird Wildflower Center near Fredericksberg and found this wonderful field of poppies as an alternate!

SOLD
I have been behind on my small daily paintings and am looking forward to getting some painted this week. This particular painting is one of a diptych painted as a commission that will be hanging in a new bank here in Denver. I will post the 2nd one tomorrow. It is 30"x40" and painted with brush and palette knife.

KMD2617 Sunny Side Up (Sunflowers, floral, landscape, original oil painting)
SOLD
Although it is spring and too early for sunflowers to be blooming I was drawn to this scene perhaps because of the cheery colors. I rendered it entirely using a small palette knife to give it lots of texture and keep it loose. I am off to the Texas Hill Country tomorrow for a week. It is Blue Bonnet season and have been told it isn't a banner year but I know I will find some great new inspiration anyway.

KMD2610 Signs of Spring
SOLD
Spring is really here in Colorado and any snows that come will be short lived. Hooray for the freshness of spring and the longer days. It is such fun when taking a walk to see all the early signs of new life happening. The crocus are always such a joy to see as they are so cheery and brave to pop up knowing there is still a chance of snow to cover them.6"x6" unframed original oil

KMD2607 One Spring Morning (urban, Europe, urbanscape, floral, garden)
SOLD
I have painted this scene before in a different composition (it was 48"x60") so it is fun to do a small version as well. There are some scenes that I love to paint more than once with different view points and this is one of them! This scene was found several years ago in Germany. We were driving thru a small town and I remember coming to a screeching halt (luckily no one was behind me) to get out and photograph it.6"x6" unframed original oil

I am so enamored with Solo, my brother and sister in law's boxer. She has so many expressions that just scream to be put to canvas, but then I am so partial to Boxers as I grew up with them and know what beautiful friends they are. Solo has such a sad yet regal look in this particular piece. 7"x5" unframed original oil

KME2589 Guinea in Blue by Kit Hevron Mahoney (Encaustic painting)
Finally, I have some encaustic paintings to show. It took awhile to set up a studio and start experimenting. I did this little painting inspired by a piece I did in a workshop in Texas last January. I stayed with a good friend and fellow artist, Julie, in Boerne, TX who has a Guinea Hen living on her property. She sent me these incredibly beautiful feathers that the unnamed Guinea leaves behind which I have immortalized.
It is a challenge to find time to experiment in the encaustics, abstracts and keep up with my regular painting these days but I love the challenge.
I have a little description of encaustic for those who are wondering what the hec it is!
Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood, though canvas and other materials are often used.
Encaustic painting was practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B.C. Click here for more history

At last, a moment to do one of my small daily paintings. I have been busy with some great commissions and experimenting with some abstract paintings. I am in a real period of exploration and just loving the new focus. I will be posting some of my new works soon. KM2591 Steeping in Brillliance ( autumn, fall, landscape, waterscape)
I started this painting with large, thick brushstrokes but was unsatisfied with where it was going so I changed over to the palette knife and got a result that I am really happy with. I can't believe such a scene is in my backyard but this was found near my house last fall while walking my dog Farley. His insistence on a daily walk keeps me in shape and aware of the beautiful world around me!

KMD2590 Waiting to Sing (birds, waxwing, nature, original oil painting
With spring almost here I am now hearing symphonies of the birds singing. I don't even listen to my music while walking my dog in preference to the music of these great creatures announcing the arrival of spring.
I have been challenged by my painting partner on this painting as to whether this is a finished piece. Let me know your vote and I will tell you ours!

KMD2588 Fleeting Moment (landscape, Southwest, original oil painting)
Once again I am having fun expressing myself using the palette knife as my brush. I love working from photos I took several years back in Basque del Apache in New Mexico. The fall colors are so wonderfully warm and vibrant that I am continually drawn to subjects with those colors.

KMD2587 Glowing Vista (landscape, vista, original oil painting)
Many collectors are surprised when I tell them that I paint over some paintings that just don't go where I had intended them to go. This is one such painting. Once I let go of a painting that isn't working the new painting is almost always a great success. I feel that about this one. It is a cathartic experience to let go of the frustration of a painting going nowhere to opening oneself to a fresh new start.

KM2585 Journey into Spring (landscape, Texas Hill Country, abstracted landscape, bluebonnets)
SOLD
It has been very busy at the studio with our hosting 2 different fundraisers: The Painted Violin for the Denver Young Artists Orchestra and the Art of Nursing Benefit for the U of Colo College of Nursing. That is my excuse for not posting my small daily paintings as regularly and I also have been working larger paintings as posted here. This is an abstracted landscape done entirely with a large palette knife. It was very freeing to paint this without a brush! This is a scene from last spring in the Texas Hill Country.30"x40" unframed original oil

KM2584 What are You Looking At (cows, cattle, animal, livestock)
For all the painting I have been doing lately, it feels like I don't have much to show, but then I forget that it takes more time to create these larger paintings. I am also spending more time exploring encaustic painting and some more abstracted works.
I had to do this painting of the cows as they are so curious and whenever you go to photograph them they all turn and come your way to see what you are up to.

KMD2583 Fall Vista (fall, Italy, landscape, autumn landscape)
I found this wonderful picture taken in the Tuscan region of Italy while traveling there with my Brushstrokes Studio partners John and Anita. I painted this with heavy paint on a palette knife. KMD2582 Warm Reflections (fall, autumn, waterscape, reflections)
I painted this scene at the end of 2010 and just discovered that I had not posted it.
The subject, of course, is one of my latest fascinations.......patterns of color and design found in water reflections. It is exciting and frustrating to have so much photo reference accumulated and so little time to paint it all. It is a wonderful life to be passionate about creating as it is a continual learning curve with endless possibilities.

KM2582 Fall Glory (autumn, fall, landscape, original oil painting)
This is a study for a larger painting that I have been commissioned to paint. My collectors had the thrill of watching this come to life as they watched me paint it at Brushstrokes Gallery where my studio is shared with my partners John and Anita. This is when it is such fun to have a working studio-gallery where our collectors and art lovers can come in and watch the creative process of painting.

KMD2581 This Little Piggy Too (farm animal, piglet, pig, animal)
I had started this little guy a month ago and got sidetracked and put him aside. I just found the canvas under a pile of "to do's" that I had forgotten to do!
This is a little piggy photographed in China in a small village where the people raise their livestock practically in their homes. The family must have wondered about our American tour group all excitedly photographing their little piglets as though they had never seen one before! Really, it was a photo opt with the little piglets so beautifully backlit.

I just couldn't stray too far from my latest animal passion. Who knows why I feel compelled to paint a subject but when it speaks to me I know I best go for it while I am excited about it for tomorrow it might be something totally different. Perhaps it is because I am a Gemini! This little fellow was photographed several years ago when my husband and I visited New Zealand, a wonderful, memorable journey.
