I fell in love with this scene while on my trip through Southern Utah last October. A winter storm was brewing leaving the skies a dark grey blue. The turning gold aspen against that sky were colors to behold. In spite of how tumultuous early winter storms are, this scene had a really peaceful feeling to it.

This is a commission done for RBC Dain Rauscher in Fort Collins placed through Rowley Interiors. I painted 3 others for this beautiful new office space which I will be posting soon. I have had such fun doing these large pieces now that we have a studio large enough in which to create them. I am so grateful to have a had a year filled with so many commissions

KM2915 After the Rain by Denver, CO artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (12x12 oil urban landscape, New England, Marblehead, MA)
I have just returned from a week long road trip to Southern Utah with my friend and fellow photographer Pat. We saw some amazing landscape even with the National Parks closed, although we did get into Zion on our last day. This painting was done before leaving for Utah and is from a trip to New England a few years ago. It is one that has been in my "TO PAINT" files for quite awhile and it was fun to finally get to it. There will be some paintings from my Utah trip to follow in days to come. There will be a few in our upcoming show this weekend at Brushstrokes Studio-Gallery here in Denver.

Colorado Flood Relief Fundraiser KM2124 Fields of Lavender by Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7 original oil landscape)
Thank you Amy and Sean
Here is my 2nd painting whose sale proceeds will be contributed to the Colorado relief efforts. I will send the very generous purchaser the painting along with details of the donation placed in their name. I want thank everyone in advance for helping in the relief efforts for the many displaced Coloradans who were unfortunate enough to have been in the path of this disaster.
These lavender fields were painted from photos I took in Sequim, Washington from a trip with my husband Jim several years ago. Much closer than Provence!

KM2907 Nature's Jewels by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (24x30 oil autumn, nature, Glacier National Park)
I was shocked at how much time has gone by since I posted on my blog. I seem to be going from daily paintings to monthly paintings being posted, although I am painting much more than that. It has been a great year for commissions and I am currently working on a piece for the Denver, Colorado Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital campus redevelopment project and last month had a poppy painting placed at the Kaiser Permanente Arapahoe office reception area. This painting is another I have created in the series of painting from images that I have put aside through the years. I found this image on a trip several years ago to the Canadian part of Glacier National Park with my great travel companion Pat. I have always loved the color and light of this close up of some fall foilage, Oak leaves I am thinking. It is for sale at Longcoat Fine Art Gallery in Ruidoso, NM. I am currently gathering ideas for our upcoming October show "Define and Describe" at Brushstrokes.

KM2908 Autumn Spirit by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (36x48 oil landscape, fall, autumn Colorado scene)
What a fantastic time I had painting this scene that I found one fall on the way in to our mountain cabin. It was so enjoyable to immerse myself into the warm colors and textures of this scene. This is one of many that have been on the back burner to paint and I finally have allowed myself to tackle. Our new space at Brushstrokes is so much more open allowing all of us to create much larger images.

KM2897 Sacred Shadows by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (48x36 original oil landscape, abstract, aspen)
SOLD
Where does one start after such a hiatus since my last posting that it is hard to know where to start. The good news is that I was swamped with several commissions including 5 abstract paintings for Eye Care Associates in Fort Collins, CO and one floral oil painting for the Arapahoe reception area of Kaiser Permanente in Denver, CO. They were all large pieces and I had a great time painting them. Hopefully, now I will be able to settle down to do some more small daily paintings in addition to the paintings I am starting for our next show here at Brushstrokes. This is a painting I have always wanted to do but never took the time to tackle and am really happy with the results.

KMD2895 Keenly Awaiting by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (7x5 original oil landscape)
SOLD
While searching my reference files I came across this nostalgic scene that jumped out and spoke to me to paint. As I was painting it, my studio partner Anita commented "didn't you paint that once before?" In looking back through my many Daily Paintings, sure enough, I had painted it several years ago. But then, this is the person that has been know to buy the same book twice and discover part way into the book that I have already read it!!!!! It is fun to paint a scene again to see how it compares to how I approached it many years ago.

KM2896 Toast the Town by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (6x8 ,abstract, urban, San Francisco, original oil)
SOLD
Weekend before last I went to San Francisco with my great friends Connie and Pat. We had the most memorable, fun an crazy times with good friends of theirs who live there. It is a weekend that will go down as top of my list of good times. I created this painting from a picture taken of sunset over San Francisco from the condo where we stayed. I had such a great time painting this with the freedom and abandon I felt throughout our visit. I hope this will translate into more of my work.

KM2891 Spirit of Vastness by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (30x40 landscape)
This is another painting that took on a life of its own. I had intended to have some moody clouds in this scene from Montana photographed several years ago. When I got the sky in and observed the movement in the sky from the color and brush work, I decided they told more than clouds would in this piece. I may do another with the clouds to see where it goes. I love the serenity in these wide open spaces where one can see only the natural landscape for miles.

KMA2890 Red Sky at Night by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7 abstract landscape)
Another abstracted landscape. I am having so much fun with these landscapes. It is interesting how I become enamored with different subjects and orientation choices. This month I am drawn to strong horizontal images and working to make them less detailed without losing the feeling of the moment that I am capturing. Perhaps it is a reflection of my life, for I am wanting to do more serene subjects with excitement created through color.

KMA2687 Ethereal Aspen by Denver, Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (abstract landscape 48x74, aspen)
This is a commission painted for the lounge in the Washington Park Grille restaurant, a neighborhood gem, on Old South Gaylord Street here in Denver. If you live in the area and have not been to the Grille, do stop in to enjoy a fabulous meal and see my painting. Commissions are always a challenge to meet the expectations of the client and I was thrilled with how this came out and how it enhances the space.

KMA2884 The Dreamer's Moon by Denver, Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (5x7 original abstract oil painting, abstract landscape, landscape, abstraction)
I was thrilled with the result of this painting. It started as a representational landscape from a photo taken in Montana at sunset but the painting evolved into this abstraction where one can ponder the sun or moon. I am doing a 30x40 of this as well. It is the direction I am wanting to go in my abstracts where there is enough information for the viewer to ponder the subject and let their imagination come into play. This one was successful because my studio partners looked over while I was working on it and saw that I needed to go no further, and yelled "stop". Thank you John and Kelly. Sometimes we need that feedback before going too far with a painting.

KMD888 'Ua'u Kani by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (7x5 original oil birds, baby bird)
With my great love for animals, it was such a treat to paint this little fellow. While visiting my wonderful friends Pat and Connie in Kauai, Pat and I went to Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and Lighthouse. This little fellow, a Wedge-Tailed Shearwater was resting on a ledge at the lighthouse seemingly oblivious to all of us tourists happily snapping picture after picture of him. The Shearwater got its name because it is a seabird that hunts for food by skimming close to the surface of the water, then plunging through the waves to catch the fish or squid it spotted from the air. "Shear" means to cut or slice through. This bird seems to slice through the ocean spray as it flies in search of food.

KMD2883 Lush July by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (7x5 original oil landscape, Colorado vista)
SOLD
As I am getting back to doing the smaller daily paintings I am going through my plethora of photographs from years past. There are so many fun paintings to be done from all the travels I have photographed that it is hard to choose. As spring seems so late this year I am sure I responded to the intense color and beauty of this scene near Gothic outside of Crested Butte during the wildflower season. Sometimes I wonder if anyone who has not seen this scene can believe it is really this colorful, but indeed it is.

KMA2880 Kinetic Poetry I by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (12x12 abstract, oil on panel)
I have done a series of 3 of these colorful abstract paintings. I am offering each of them for sale on the internet for half my gallery price. I will be posting the others later but if you are interested in seeing them before they get posted just email me at kitmahoney@yahoo.com and I will send you images of the other 2. Each is painted in oil on a 12"x12" panel board that is 1" deep. They can easily be framed if that is preferred. These abstracts are really a fun and creative break from the representational works I do and I know that the thought process in these gets integrated in my representational work as I grow as an artist.

KM2879 Evening Descends by Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (urban landscape, 18x14, oil, Rockport, MA, lobster buoy)
Evening Descends is a painting I have created from a photo taken when I was in New England,(Rockport, MA specifically). This is one of many that have been in my "Favorites" file from all my photo adventures. My favorite file is full of pictures I really want to paint but have procrastinated for a variety of reasons. Some of those reasons are "Will it sell?", "how do I tackle this one?" etc. I have reached a point in my career where I am now focusing on painting what really speaks to me to put on canvas and this is one. I loved the light on this one that says the day is over, the work is done and peace falls upon the land as the sun sets.

KM2875 Rising Star by Colorado fine artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (48x36, oil, floral landscape)
SOLD
This painting is one I have wanted to do for a couple of years. The scene is from a trip to Crested Butte, Colorado during their wildflower season in July. It is magnificent and hard to believe the feast before your eyes see in the varieties of flowers, colors and subjects to photograph and paint. When I saw this through the lens of my camera I knew it would one day be a painting.

KMA2873 Somewhere in Time by Colorado contemporary artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (36x36 abstract, mixed media abstract landscape)
This abstract evolved into a feeling of landscape. I originally painted it upside down from what is seen here, but it kept speaking that I needed to rotate it and allow the sense of a landscape to come through. This is where abstract painting is such challenging fun, letting it take on its own life and letting go of my own expectations. Learning to go with the flow! 36"x36" unframed original mixed media on panel board

KM2872 Spring's Infinite Glory by Denver Colorado fine artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (floral, 9x12, poppies)
One of my latest representational works in anticipation of springtime. Spring is my most favorite season (if it ever gets here in Denver, although I am not complaining as we desperately need all the moisture from the snow storms). I can't wait for the progression of blooms that are coming, from the first brave crocus, onward to tulips and daffodils, crabapples, lilacs and then my favorite poppies. This time of year is so fresh and full of hope with all the new life coming forth.

KM2868 Standing Tall by Colorado Artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (40x20 Colorado landscape painting, aspen fall)
I have been busy painting for my new gallery in New Buffalo Michigan.
This is a Colorado fall scene painted in oil on a 40"x20" gallery wrap canvas.
Lately, I seem to be drawn to doing the tall vertical paintings. I don't know why it seems I find myself doing a majority of vertical compositions and then go through spells of nothing but horizontals.
I would love to know the psychology of what is going on inside that draws me to one or the other! If you are interested in purchasing this painting please contact Gene at the Courtyard Gallery I am very excited to be a part of this beautiful gallery and artists showing there.

KM2864 Springtime in the Country by Denver, Colorado artist Kit Hevron Mahoney (36x24, landscape, orginal oil painting, Texas)
This is another painting created for the Courtyard Gallery in New Buffalo, MI.
It is a scene from near the Willow Creek Loop in the Hill Country of Texas during the Blue Bonnet season.
There is a lifetime of paintings to be created when it is a good blooming year.
But of course, I was drawn to the wonderful reflections in this creek surrounded by red cliffs and the purple Blue Bonnets off in the distance.
Please contact Gene at the Courtyard Gallery if you would like to purchasing this painting.

This painting is of a scene from a late summer day at the Denver Botanic Gardens in Denver, CO. It was painted for the upcoming Colorado Governor's Invitational Art Show and Sale that opens on April 27, 2013.
This is a fabulous show that I am proud to be invited to participate in. This is my 11th year with this show.

Wow, I have not been posting for a few months! Moving Brushstrokes and settling into our magnificent new space has consumed me for longer than I thought. I have been painting commissions, for the upcoming Colorado Governor's Show and for my new gallery, Courtyard Gallery in Michigan.
I am looking forward to creating some of my daily paintings but meanwhile I thought I would post my latest that I have painted for our new space. This is a scene from Crested Butte when the wildflowers are in full bloom. An amazing array of color and beauty.
